Department/Organization: 500203 - Environmental and Lab Safety

Normal Work Schedule: Varies, Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm

Job Summary: The Environmental Hazard Technician I assists with inspections, testing, and environmental monitoring services in one of the following areas within the Department of Environmental Health and Safety: environmental hazards, hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, laboratory safety, or occupational safety.

Additional Department Summary: The Environmental Hazard Technician I is responsible for laboratory inspections, inventory management and control, security evaluations, laboratory equipment inspections, training requests, chemical purchase requests, and correspondence between the laboratories and EHS regarding laboratory concerns. Communicates with researchers and students within the laboratory and research spaces on campus daily, fielding questions related to training requests, chemical purchases and delivery of chemicals of interests. Assists in emergency response on campus and any related to the Hazardous Waste Chemical Storage Facility (CSF). Provides additional support to other EHS functions and as such this position is required to maintain communication accessibility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Environmental Hazard Technicians may be required to respond to emergency situations after hours. Required Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of hazardous waste, general safety, life safety, environmental hazards, laboratory safety, or occupational safety experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Must successfully submit to and pass physical with clearance from physician to wear a respirator.

Skills and Knowledge: Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience related to laboratory safety, environmental safety, general safety, life safety, occupational safety, hazardous waste, etc. (Hazwoper training, chemical inventory and management, and other areas associated with environmental compliance and/or lab safety).
