The selected candidate for this position must have a HS diploma/GED with a science/technology background and at least 4 years work experience in a Processing Plant or similar environment preferred. An associate degree is preferred. Candidates must have a basic awareness of environmental regulations and a mechanical and technical background is preferred. Valid drivers license is required. The job entails working in the Hazardous Waste Storage Facility and the Astoria Wastewater Treatment Facility. "This position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan."
Core Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain equipment in the Astoria Wastewater Treatment Facility and Benzene Treatment Facility.
- .Physical handling of hazardous waste drums
- Will be able to qualify and operate at minimum a 4-ton forklift and up to a 20-ton forklift.
- Perform chemical changeouts at the water treatment plan following the safety practices.
- Load and unload drums and oil filled electrical equipment for transportation.
- Offload and load tankers in and out of the waste water treatment plant.
- Candidate will have excellent oral and written skills and be able to work with minimum supervision and report any anomalies to the supervisor.
- Quality control of drums, checking labels and associated waste tracking information, and QA/QC manifests, shipping papers, and all waste related documents.
- Will be able to learn how to use the waste module in Maximo.
- Complete regulatory inspections, operational logs, and take meter readings and analysis samples as required.
- Normal working shift hours are 6:00AM to 2:00PM or 2:00PM to 10:00PM (Plant only) Monday through Friday with multi shifts possible and weekends when necessary.
Required Education/Experience
- High School Diploma/GED and 4 years equivalent technical experience or
- Associate's Degree In Chemistry/Mechanical Technology, or related field and 1 years equivalent technical experience
Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
- Ability to respond to system emergencies
- Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
- Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
- Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
- Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
- Ability to climb ladders and stairs
- Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
- Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
- Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
- Ability to use hand tools and operate heavy machinery, i.e. jackhammers
- Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
- Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
- Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment

- The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
