Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Senior Superintendent for Mechanical HVAC, provide direct supervision to multi-skilled trade personnel on ventilation corrective/preventative maintenance and construction projects. Assign work and provide expert technical ventilation support for the installation, inspection, maintenance and service of ventilation systems. Direct the service and repairs on a variety of campus ventilation systems including air handlers, return and exhaust fans, fume hoods, perchloric hoods, BSC cabinets and various other HVAC systems. Oversee database for annual fume hood certification insuring all hoods are up to date on certification requirements. Work directly with Work Flow Analyst (WFA) to complete annual master list for Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) records. Supervise mechanics on corrections associated with Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) inspections and associated record keeping and auditing. - Certification in a specialty skilled trade.
- Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Progressively responsible experience coordinating maintenance in a large commercial, institutional, or research facility, including experience directing skilled trades personnel, planning and scheduling work, assessing priorities, documenting performance, and managing safety and service expectations.
- Experience supervising or serving as a lead for HVAC or ventilation staff and coordinating work in laboratories or other critical environments is strongly preferred.
- Sufficient familiarity with ventilation systems and trade practices to scope work, recognize operational risks, review technical findings, and obtain appropriate specialist support; independent journey-level troubleshooting and air balancing are responsibilities of the assigned mechanics
- Ability to plan, prioritize, and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance work, including staffing, materials, schedules, backlogs, urgent needs, work quality, documentation, and regulatory/compliance requirements in occupied and research facilities.
- Working knowledge of commercial and laboratory ventilation systems, with the ability to assess risks and results, coordinate qualified technical staff, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and use work management, scheduling, spreadsheet, and reporting systems to track work, resources, costs, and performance.
- Ability to supervise and develop employees by assigning work, setting expectations, coaching and evaluating performance, addressing performance concerns, and consistently applying University policies, labor agreements, and safety requirements.

- Skilled at customer service using interpersonal, oral and written communication to interact and communicate effectively with all levels of management, counterparts, contractors, clients, and craft workers with diplomacy, tact and professionalism.
- Analytical skill to read and interpret technical data, mechanical and structural specifications, blueprints, diagrams, shop drawings, cfm calculations, and associated instrumentation data.
- Skills to maintain up to date records regarding fume hood certifications required annually and required AAALAC data entry.
- Computer skills to manage work assignments; plan, track, manage costs and schedules. Knowledge of departmental budgetary process. Knowledge of University, campus and department policies, procedures and standard practices.
