Summary

Weisiger Group is a major supplier of heavy equipment, diesel engines, and industrial trucks with headquarters in Charlotte, NC, and locations in NC, SC, GA, AL, and TN. This growing and safety-focused organization is looking for a reliable DOT Safety Specialist. This role is responsible for the driver-facing administration, training, program development, and operational execution of the company's Fleet Driver Program. Working closely in partnership with the Fleet Department and the EHS Team, this role ensures company-wide adherence to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration ("FMCSA"), Department of Transportation ("DOT") regulations, and internal safety policies. The ideal candidate manages driver qualifications, monitors daily telematics and video events, conducts one-on-one coaching, leads incident reviews, and oversees regulatory compliance to mitigate risk and protect the organization. Activities include mitigating risk, coordinating training and road testing, maintenance of driver files, and evaluating, monitoring, and reporting program elements to qualify drivers to operate within legal parameters and company program requirements. The ideal candidate will possess strong regulatory knowledge, keen attention to detail, and the ability to effectively communicate across departments.

Essential Functions

Program Development, Execution & Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Partner directly with the Fleet Department and EHS Team to develop, implement, and enforce proactive Fleet Safety policies and health and safety plans.
  • Evaluate and audit driver program elements to verify all commercial motor vehicle ("CMV") drivers are qualified and operating within legal parameters.
  • Maintain and audit Driver Qualification Files ("DQ") in the company EHS data management system in accordance with 49 CFR Part 391 regulations.
  • Manage the end-to-end driver onboarding process, including background check reviews, Motor Vehicle Record ("MVR") evaluation, completion rates for required training, and previous employer safety performance investigations.
  • Manage timely renewals of medical certificates, driver's licenses, and annual MVR reviews.
  • Audit DQ files to verify drivers transporting placarded loads possess a valid Commercial Driver's License ("CDL") with a Hazmat Endorsement (H) and TSA background check.

Daily Telematics Review & Analysis & DOT Compliance

  • Monitor and analyze daily triggered video events and telematics platforms (e.g., GeoTab) for safety violations and high-risk behaviors.
  • Prioritize high-risk events, initiate Causal Analysis Processes, and maintain detailed logs.
  • Monitor Hours of Service (HOS) compliance, verify ELD data accuracy against video timestamps, and investigate discrepancies.
  • Oversee DOT drug and alcohol program compliance and return-to-duty processes.
  • Review pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection documentation, validate MSHA documentation, and coordinate with fleet maintenance on safety-related repairs.
  • Assist the Fleet Department in configuring telematics alert thresholds, permissions, and camera functionality.

Driver Safety, Training & Coaching

  • Develop in-person and video-based training materials using real incident footage and regulatory standards to educate drivers on safe driving practices.
  • Conduct safety meetings, facilitate new driver orientations, and maintain comprehensive training documentation.
  • Ensure drivers transporting hazardous materials complete initial upon-hire and recurrent training (general awareness, function-specific, safety/emergency response, and security awareness).
  • Facilitate driver Road Tests according to company policy.
  • Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions using incident information, video evidence and telematics data.
  • Develop corrective action plans for repeat offenders in coordination with operational supervisors and Human Resources.
  • Perform routine audits to monitor conformance to regulations and company policy, review pre-trip and post-trip inspection documentation and ensure proper completion, validate documentation, and coordinate with the Fleet Department on safety-related repairs, and ensure proper documentation retention.
  • Prepare and maintain driver logs, video archives, and documentation for DOT audits and inspections.

Incident Management, Investigation and Claims Management

  • Immediately secure and review camera footage following fleet incidents or collisions.
  • Conduct thorough incident reviews and prepare comprehensive reports incorporating video evidence, police reports, and factual logs.
  • Coordinate with the Fleet Department to obtain and maintain chain of custody for video evidence and document exoneration events to protect the company against false claims.

Data Management, Performance Metrics & Analytics

  • Generate monthly fleet safety scorecards by driver, fleet, and business unit.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and telematics ROI to present safety trends and executive reports to leadership.
  • Prepare and maintain driver logs, video archives, and documentation for DOT audits and inspections.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of experience, or 4+ years of dedicated experience in Fleet Safety and DOT compliance.
  • Direct experience with telematics and video monitoring platforms (e.g., GeoTab, etc).
  • NATMI (North American Transportation Management Institute) certification or similar DOT compliance credentials preferred.
  • Active Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is highly preferred.
  • General occupational safety, health, and environmental (EHS) experience or knowledge preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong expertise in FMCSA, DOT, 49 CFR regulations, HOS, ELD, and drug/alcohol testing programs.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and digital EHS platforms.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication, root-cause analysis, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive driver coaching and enforce accountability with diplomacy.
