What to Expect

As an Engineerin the SeatingEngineering Department, you will be responsible for Design Engineering from concept to End of Life,as well as problem solving of existing products.

Today'sseatingcommodities include structures, mechanisms,actuators,cushions,wire harnesses, controllers,sensors,software,trimsand so on.However, future seating solutions are not limited to these.Progression istargeted.A seat can be defined as a product which enables comfortable support forvehicularoccupants.Insome sense,a seatcan be viewed as a moving robotic structural art piece.

Team members typically play dual roles as experts and polymaths. Each team member typically usestheirexpertiseasasuperpowerto complement the team. Youshall be part of theSeatingEngineering Team which resides withinTesla's Vehicle EngineeringGroup,

As an integrated part of Tesla's Vehicle Engineeringteam; you will conceptualize, design, engineer and manageSeatingSystemparts and products. You shall bepart and productresponsible.

Primarily contributing to the team with your expertise on the integration of the multiple technologies that comprise the Seat Structural (stampings, welding, bolted joints, castings, engineering composites, etc.) and non-Structural components (Seat padding, upholstery, comfort devices, ornamentation hard trim, arm rest, head restraints and other aesthetic appointments). Hence a good understating and balance of the basics of Industrial Creative Design alongside Mechanical Engineering First Principles is critical to a proficient execution of this role.

The essence of your job would be to exceed the automotive industry expectations for safety and usability of the Seating systems, always based on a logical application of engineering fundamentals while employing the Design Engineering process for mass production solution which includes the following:

  • Problem understanding and definition
  • Engineering Concept generationand evaluation
  • Product strategy and architectureplanning with consideration of Human Factors
  • Negotiation, balancing and management of product attributes includingsafety,functionality,comfort,aesthetics,cost,mass,schedule,sustainability.
  • Validationand optimizationthroughincluding prototype making, physicaltesting, CAE simulations, design
  • 3D model and 2D drawingcreation
  • Bill of Materialscreation
  • Detaildesign includingdatum & fixation strategy, GD&T, DFM and Bill of Materials
  • Technical documentationcreation for official use andcommunication
  • Schedule and milestone management

What You'll Bring
  • Degree inMechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Design engineeringexperience withdemonstrated interest in multidisciplinary engineering.3+Years of demonstrable experience proved through a detailed design engineering portfolio
  • Hands on experience where you have built something. Design portfolio must include evidence of such
  • Hand-sketching abilities. One of the many engineering languages
  • Automotive engineering with seating experience is preferredbut not mandatory
  • Must have 3 years of experience with CAD software including: Catia V5, or Catia V6
  • Must have 2 years of experience with managing suppliers for product development
  • Must have 2 years of experience with overcoming design challenges for variety of materials and processes including stamping, injection molding, casting, or composites
  • Must have 3 years of experience with designing kinematics, mechanisms, or electromechanical components
  • Requires domestic travel up to 30% and international travel up to 10% [Travel will include supplier sites and Tesla manufacturing sites and will require interaction with Industrial Manufacturing equipment and settings]

    Expected Compensation
    $91,600 - $316,800/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

    Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
