Job Summary
As the subject matter expert, a Pharmacist 5 leads in their specialized area of pharmacy practice. In collaboration with teams and leaders, the role assists and is accountable for assisting the department of pharmacy in implementing departmental strategy, optimizing outcomes, achieving financial targets, and ensuring operational excellence. The role serves as a liaison with external stakeholders to work towards achieving department goals. They lead and/or coordinate team members to participate in internal and external committees, subcommittees, and taskforces/workgroups, which may include but not limited to UCOP and P&T. The Pharmacist 5 helps facilitate resident and/or student activities and learnings, as well as lead research and medication evaluations to align with overall departmental needs and goals. This individual is accountable for promoting positive patient outcomes through incorporation of clinical practice, education, system thinking, leadership, and project management.
The Specialty Pharmacy Pharmacist Coordinator (Pharmacist 5) leads and completes high-impact project work and initiatives that integrate the work performed by the UCDH Specialty Pharmacy (primarily Health Solutions Pharmacy), the Specialty Pharmacy Hub, and the non-oncology specialty clinic pharmacists. The Specialty Pharmacy Pharmacist Coordinator is tasked with standardization of work and documentation, workflow development, staff training, clinical education development, non-oncology specialty medication onboarding, medication order configuration, electronic health record enhancements (e.g., Epic Compass Rose, order set design, preference lists, smartphrases, etc.), optimizing pharmacy dispensing system build (within Willow Ambulatory), verifying and testing EHR build with the analysts, and other ongoing operational needs for the non-Oncology Specialty Pharmacy teams.
The Specialty Pharmacy Pharmacist Coordinator (Pharmacist 5) is the clinical content expert for non-oncology specialty pharmacy medications, and works in partnership with UCDH specialty pharmacy leaders (operations & clinical) and analysts to ensure alignment of technician and pharmacist workflows. This individual supports specialty drug onboarding and creates and develops clinical content education when required but not provided by industry partners. Additionally, this individual has committee involvement with UCDH Ambulatory P&T, Specialty Pharmacy QMC, and is the designated Clinical Pharmacist for URAC. This role also supports outcomes and research as it relates to patients enrolled in the URAC Specialty Pharmacy PMP, Rare Disease Program, and other therapy-specialty outcomes relating to clinical pharmacist services.

- California Board of Pharmacy License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire
- Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) or other relevant Pharmacist Board Certification (e.g., BCACP, BCPS, etc)
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-certified school of pharmacy, or equivalent training
- Recent specialty pharmacy work experience as a pharmacist beyond residency training (within the last 3 years)
- Completion of Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) residency in pharmacy practice, ambulatory care, specialty pharmacy, or community pharmacy at an American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP)-accredited program, or 3 years of equivalent pharmacist work experience
- Completion of Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) training at an American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP)-accredited program, or 5 years of equivalent pharmacist work experience
- Experience leading, completing, and executing quality improvement and research projects within pharmacy that has been (or can be) published and shared
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a sound work ethic
- Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills
- Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
- Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements for Specialty Pharmacy (e.g., URAC Specialty Pharmacy, URAC Rare Disease, REMS programs, TJC, CA BOP, etc.)
- Working knowledge of federal, state and local regulations around medication handling requirement and controlled substance accountability
- Working knowledge of prior authorization process, and pharmacy and medical billing
- Project management skills, with ability to independently plan, execute, and evaluate multiple concurrent initiatives while maintaining clinical practice
- Analytical and critical thinking abilities to evaluate literature, protocols, and clinical pathways to support evidence-based decision-making and quality improvement
- Ability to collaborate and work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment, including the ability to manage projects and deadlines, and to set and meet goals and priorities for self and others with minimal supervision
- Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached
- Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times
- Ability to maintain composure, efficiency and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines
- Ability to coach and mentor pharmacy residents, students, and staff
Preferred Qualifications
- Epic, Willow Ambulatory, or Compass Rose Certification
- 3 or more years of total pharmacy work experience in specialty pharmacy
- Recent work experience as a pharmacist in a health-system specialty pharmacy (within the last 3 years)
- Experience in quality improvement, project management, or professional service
- Experience in designing, optimizing, and maintaining electronic treatment pathways (e.g., medication order configuration and standardization), order sets and build, and transmission within the electronic health record (EHR) including to the pharmacy dispensing system
- Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams, especially related to clinical content development, EMR optimization, or committee-based initiatives (e.g., MERC, P&T, clinical governance)
- Demonstrated subject matter expertise in specialty pharmacy, including up-to-date clinical knowledge of specialty therapies, specialty pharmacy workflows and operations, and evolving practice guidelines
- Demonstrated contributions to the development, optimization, and maintenance of patient management program workflows and processes within the electronic health record for chronic disease state management by a pharmacist (i.e., Epic Compass Rose, Therigy, or comparable system)
- Written and oral communication skills to clearly and concisely provide information, explanations and instructions to, and to elicit information from others with varying levels of ability to understand, including individuals who are ill or distressed, or who may not speak English
- Skill in leading education and mentorship initiatives, especially as it relates to non-oncology specialty pharmacy and other complex ambulatory therapies, with a track record of successful teaching/precepting residents, students, or staff
- Ability to function effectively in a matrixed environment with a high degree of autonomy, while collaborating across disciplines and service lines

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
