Job Summary

This position serves as the Pharmacy Manager responsible for leading comprehensive clinical pharmacy services across Acute Care and Transitions of Care. The Manager is accountable for service-line performance, clinical and operational quality, regulatory readiness, medication-use safety, financial stewardship, workforce planning, and staff development. Working closely with the Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer of Inpatient Pharmacy Services, the Assistant Chief Pharmacy Officer of Inpatient Clinical Services, and other Pharmacy Leadership, the Manager identifies improvement opportunities, implements sustainable solutions, advances clinical pharmacy practice, and promotes operational effectiveness and efficiency. The Manager ensures clinical pharmacy services comply with state and federal regulations, Joint Commission standards, professional practice standards, University and department policies, and applicable collective bargaining agreements. The Manager serves as hiring manager and direct supervisor for clinical pharmacists, technician supervisors, and assigned pharmacy personnel within the Acute Care and Transitions of Care pharmacy teams. The Manager also partners with interdisciplinary leaders, Patient Care Services, medical staff, and other departments to support safe medication management, optimize transitions of care, improve patient outcomes, and align pharmacy services with organizational priorities. #CA-DS

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • California Pharmacist License. Out-of-state Pharmacists eligible to apply. If licensed out-of-state at the time of hire, must obtain and provide a California Pharmacist licensure within six (6) months of the hire date.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) from an accredited college or university, or equivalent training
  • Completion of a Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2) Residency in Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership, internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, cardiology, geriatrics, ambulatory care, transitions of care, pharmacotherapy or related pharmacy residency program, or five (5) years of progressively responsible health-system pharmacy experience in an acute care hospital setting
  • Two (2) years of leadership, supervisory, management, or programmatic responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people, teams, projects, or practice initiatives through influence, collaboration, accountability, effective communication, and follow-through
  • Knowledge of Board of Pharmacy, Department of Public Health, Joint Commission, and other applicable regulatory requirements impacting hospital pharmacy operations
  • Knowledge of pharmacy practice standards, medication use safety principles, formulary management, and transitions of care workflows
  • Ability to support staff development, performance feedback, conflict resolution, change management, and effective team-based communication in a dynamic health-system environment
  • Ability to lead operational, clinical, quality improvement, informatics, transitions-of-care, formulary, and medication safety projects using sound project management methods, data-informed decision-making, and effective follow-through
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage frontline staff, pharmacy leadership, interdisciplinary partners, physicians, nurses, case management, discharge planning teams, outpatient pharmacy partners, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to analyze operational and clinical performance data and implement process improvement
  • Knowledge of electronic health record, computerized provider order entry, clinical decision support, medication reconciliation, discharge medication workflows, and pharmacy informatics processes sufficient to support safe and efficient medication management

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification or equivalent relevant certification aligned with acute care, transitions of care, ambulatory care, geriatrics, pharmacotherapy, critical care, infectious diseases, cardiology, emergency medicine, or health-system pharmacy practice, such as BCPS, BCGP, BCACP, BCCCP, BCIDP, or another applicable specialty certification
  • Lean, Six Sigma, project management, change management, quality improvement, patient safety, informatics, leadership development, or health-system performance improvement certification or training that supports service-line leadership, workflow redesign, and sustainable practice advancement
  • Master's degree, such as Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science (MS), Master of Public Health (MPH), or equivalent advanced education in pharmacy administration, health-system leadership, clinical practice, patient safety, quality improvement, informatics, public health, or organizational management
  • Experience with transitions of care programs, medication-use evaluations, formulary management, medication safety initiatives, or regulatory readiness activities
  • Experience managing clinical pharmacy services within an academic medical center or large, complex integrated health system environment
  • Experience mentoring, precepting, coaching, or developing pharmacists, residents, students, technicians, supervisors, or interdisciplinary team members through structured feedback, competency development, professional development planning, and performance improvement support
  • Experience with Epic Willow, or comparable pharmacy information systems
  • Experience using pharmacy analytics, dashboards, quality metrics, medication safety reports, incident reports, productivity data, staffing or workload trends, automation, medication safety technology, clinical decision support tools, workflow assessments, or regulatory readiness findings to identify risk, prioritize opportunities, recommend solutions, and monitor outcomes
  • Demonstrated success leading strategic initiatives involving quality improvement, workflow redesign, operational efficiency, or program development

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.
