Position summary: JMT is seeking a Water Resources intern for their Newark, DE office to support with a variety of tasks, including special project assignments, active participation in project design & documentation, gain practical experience and support their educational development. Immigration sponsorship or support (e.g. H1B, F-1 CPT/OPT/STEM OPT) is not available for this position, except for qualified candidates eligible for the TN visa classification.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Assemble background research including survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographic or geologic data
  • Identify watersheds, drainage patterns, and soil conditions
  • Delineate drainage areas to points of interest for analysis
  • Assist with hydrologic and hydraulic analyses and support preparation of design calculations under the supervision of licensed engineers
  • Make edits and updates to existing engineering drawings and design files
  • Perform quantity takeoffs and tabulations
  • Provide input on potential solutions to engineering problems using basic theories and engineering fundamentals
  • Assist with the layout and design of routine drainage, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control plans
  • Assist with preparation of technical specifications and design documentation
  • Maintain accurate, organized, and current project documentation
  • Communicate effectively through written and verbal means with project team members
  • Apply fundamental engineering principles learned in coursework to real-world projects
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn new tools, standards, and procedures

  • Perform other related duties as assigned


  • Familiarity in using standard Microsoft Office for document creation and email communication
  • Ability to prepare well organized, clear, and concise written materials
  • Ability to support work with attention to detail and creativity
  • Developing presentation skills, including communicating ideas to different groups
  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively with guidance from supervisors
  • Strong teamwork skills with the ability to collaborate well with others


  • Full-time student, rising junior or senior, currently pursuing an ABET accredited undergraduate degree in civil engineering with an interest in transportation projects


Qualifications Preferred



  • Coursework in a related field
  • Previous internship experience
  • Familiarity with design and production software, with the ability to use these tools to develop project documents and collaborate with project team members


Working Conditions

Work is generally performed within an office environment. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25lbs) may be required as needed.
