Nature and Scope

The Oncology Hospitalist provides primary inpatient management for patients with cancer, with a focus on acute medical issues, treatment-related complications, and care coordination. Medical Oncologists function as consultants for cancer-specific diagnosis, treatment planning, and therapeutic decision making. This co-management model is designed to improve timeliness of care, inpatient throughput, and continuity across the oncology care continuum.

The incumbent evaluates, diagnoses, and treats hospitalized patients with oncologic conditions, including solid tumors and hematologic malignancies. This role combines the rapid decision-making and systems-based practice of hospital medicine with specialized oncology management, including chemotherapy-related toxicities, immunotherapy complications, and end-of-life care.

The physician participates in hospital governance, quality improvement, and clinical program development, particularly in rural or resource-limited environments where adaptability and collaboration are essential. Ongoing education, adherence to regulatory standards, and participation in interdisciplinary communication are required.
