At RWJBarnabas Health, the Pharmacy Technician, Retail Tech Coordinator plays a critical role in patient care and operational excellence. Operating with a high level of independence, they perform complex discharge coordination and home infusion intake procedures according to strict medical, legal, and professional pharmacy standards. They are responsible for exercising professional judgment during benefits verification, ensuring accurate transition documentation, delivering age-specific care support, and maintaining seamless workflow collaboration within the multidisciplinary clinical department.

A typical day for a Pharmacy Technician may include:

  • Prepares home infusion care plans for patients transitioning to outpatient IV medication, clearly explains the process, and positions resources to support safe discharges
  • Operates pharmacy software, CareTend systems, computers, and intake applications necessary to ensure a safe and accurate diagnostic and therapeutic procedure support
  • Assist case managers and physicians during discharge planning and referral processing by providing documents, tracking logs, or monitoring intake activities
  • Sets up up-to-date referral source files and essential insurance records following corporate guidelines, handles co-pay discussions, and reviews benefits to assist with care delivery
  • Calibrates, maintains, and adjusts care coordination workflows, and reports distribution obstacles or other problems immediately to the appropriate support or leadership
  • Monitors and calls out referral metrics, alerting the clinical team immediately to any changes in patient condition or program eligibility requirements
  • Utilizes the CareTend database and intake systems to enter accurately identified and verified records of patients, and retrieves old authorization files when necessary
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of pharmacy protocols including medication pump familiarization, IV access devices, safety, and prescription submission methods
  • Collaborates professionally in a hospital and home care environment, working in close cooperation with physicians, nursing departments, and case management staff
  • Demonstrates initiative, flexibility, and the ability to assume multi-task duties and function under significant time pressures

To be considered for this Pharmacy Technician, Retail Tech Coordinator opportunity:

  • Graduate with an Associate's degree or possesses an equivalent level of pharmacy technician expertise
  • Problem-solving, critical thinking, decisive judgment, collaboration, and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Must hold and maintain active registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy
  • Demonstrated ability to perform test claims, verify pricing, and check medication availability within CareTend software
  • Strong baseline knowledge of prescription processing, insurance benefit verification, and co-pay structure analysis
  • Active Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national credential is preferred
  • Prior professional experience working in a home infusion, home care, or specialty pharmacy setting is preferred
  • Functional knowledge of managed care insurance plans, commercial drug benefits, and authorization processes is a plus
