Job Summary

The Lead Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for leading teams and performing structured cabling and low voltage installations on large-scale commercial projects. This role includes installing, terminating, testing, and troubleshooting copper and fiber cabling systems, building IT closets, installing network equipment, and ensuring work complies with applicable safety and industry standards. The Lead Technician will coordinate field teams, communicate with project stakeholders, manage materials and labor needs, and review blueprints and project changes. This is a contract-to-hire position requiring flexibility to work overtime and night shifts as project needs require.

Job Responsibilities




  • Install CAT5e, CAT6, fiber optic, and related structured cabling infrastructure.



  • Dress, route, label, and manage cabling within IT closets, modular furniture, and work area outlets.



  • Install cable pathways, including J-hooks, D-rings, cable trays, and ladder racks.



  • Terminate cabling at patch panels, jacks, keystones, RJ-45 connectors, and modular plugs.



  • Install wireless access points (WAPs), fiber ONTs, network switches, and related equipment.



  • Build and organize IT closets, including data racks, ladder racks, cable trays, patch panels, sleeves, and 110/66 blocks.



  • Perform fiber optic installation, splicing, and testing using Fluke and OTDR equipment.



  • Read, interpret, and follow project blueprints and installation specifications.



  • Lead field teams to complete large-scale commercial projects safely, efficiently, and according to project requirements.



  • Coordinate with general contractors, clients, project managers, and other project stakeholders.



  • Conduct required safety meetings and reinforce proper PPE, OSHA, and jobsite safety practices.



  • Maintain clean and organized work areas throughout each project.



  • Order appropriate materials based on project requirements.



  • Forecast labor requirements and communicate staffing needs.



  • Document blueprint changes and submit change orders to the Project Manager as required.




Job Requirements




  • 7+ years of commercial structured cabling, low voltage, or data cable installation experience.



  • Previous experience leading teams on commercial construction or low voltage projects.



  • Experience coordinating with general contractors, clients, and project stakeholders.



  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.



  • Knowledge of BICSI structured cabling installation standards.



  • Experience with fiber optic splicing, installation, and testing, including Fluke and OTDR equipment.



  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and project specifications.



  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.



  • Scissor lift and boom lift certification preferred.



  • Hilti, fall protection, and confined space certifications preferred.



  • Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and from scissor or boom lifts.



  • Ability to work safely in confined spaces when required.



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move materials weighing up to 75 pounds.



  • Ability to stand and work on your feet for the duration of the shift.



  • Ability to provide reliable transportation to local project sites.



  • Ability to work overtime and night shifts as project requirements dictate.



  • Ability to use standard structured cabling hand tools, including a multi-bit screwdriver, torpedo level, tape measure, snips, pliers, cable stripper, 110/66 punch-down tool, modular plug crimper, flashlight, hammer, wrench set, and tool pouch.



  • Ability to provide appropriate work boots, gloves, and other required personal work gear.
