Responsibilities

TheDirectional Drill Operator/Locator Trainee, supporting our Long Haul Travel crew, is responsible for learning how to properly become a Drill Operator/Locator by following job training and instruction safely and efficiently, as provided by the Foreman, Operator, and Locator on the crew.

In addition, you will:

  • Observe and be hands-on when appropriate while the crew leader is operating the directional drill
  • Spot and expose the dig utilities for the directional driller, so that any existing lines are not hit
  • Fill out an effective pre-job briefing to mitigate hazards on the job site
  • Before taking on the lead role, one must know how to properly fill this out before starting any work
  • Operate the drill rig efficiently
  • Prepare the job and drill so that the shot can be performed safely
  • Pothole all utilities that will either be paralleled or crossed during the bore shot
  • Verify existing utilities
  • Fill water tanks with water
  • Combine water with chemicals for boring according to the ground you are drilling in
  • Locate the drill head from point A to point B without hitting any utilities at the correct depth
  • Hook up the swivel, reamer, and pipe product that will be pulled back to complete the bore shot
  • Before the bore shot is started, walk out the bore shot to ensure all utilities have been located and develop a plan for going above or below each utility or obstacle in the bore path
  • Pull back the product with the correct hole opener and utilize the correct mud mixture to ensure that the product makes it from point B to point A
  • Inspect and maintain job equipment
  • Perform other duties as required and/or assigned
  • Assist the Directional Drill Operator and Locator with underground conduit, fiber optic, and coax installation while building on your existing skills and developing expertise in Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)
  • Learn Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operations, utility locating, and safe drilling practices
  • Perform general labor duties, including excavation, backfilling, and site restoration
  • Travel up to 100% as required to support telecom construction projects

Qualifications

About You:
  • You possess a High School Diploma, or equivalent
  • You have a CDL Class A license with tanker endorsement
  • You have precise hand-eye coordination
  • You have good written and verbal communication skills
  • You have clarity of vision at 20 feet or more and 20 inches or less, with the ability to judge distance and space relationships
  • Ability to identify and distinguish colors of utility flags and markings on the ground
  • 1 or more years of experience
  • You have an OSHA 10 certification
  • You have a Transportation Worker Identification Credential
  • Ability to do some maintenance of drill equipment and mixing unit
  • You have 1-2 years of experience in Construction Telecom or a similar industry
  • You have a basic understanding of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) operations, locating, and industry best practices
  • Open to travel 7 days per diem (Working 4-5 weeks on, and 5 days off, on a rotating work schedule; 50-60 hours per week, depending on the weather), and working overtime consistently

Compensation of $23-$26 per hour, depending on the experience.
