Bering-Alaka`ina Holdings, LLC has a potential need for a Sterile Surgical Technologist to provide support for our government customer in San Antonio, TX.

DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform interchangeable roles during surgical procedures, including Scrub Technician, Circulating Technician, and Veterinary Medicine Technician, to ensure continuous protocol staffing.
  • Serve as the anesthetist for live tissue models; independently manage the pre-anesthesia, induction, and maintenance phases of anesthesia, continuously monitoring vital signs and adjusting anesthetic parameters to maintain appropriate physiologic depth.
  • Provide immediate intraoperative critical care assistance to the Attending Veterinarian or Research Surgeon during complex research and training projects.
  • Collect, prepare, and handle surgical specimens (e.g., tissue, blood) intraoperatively using the most efficacious approach based on diverse protocol situations.
  • Perform advanced pre-surgical vascular access requirements, including the placement of central lines and internal/external monitoring lines.
  • Mathematically calculate precise, weight-based drug doses,administer pre-anesthesia sedation and execute pre-surgical pain management protocols as dictated by the research study.
  • Perform general technical functions within the surgical suite, post-operative recovery areas, and research housing facilities ;continuously evaluate the basic medical and physiological status of research subjectsto coordinate actively with attending staff to maintain the health and welfare of models.
  • Safely restrain, handle, and transport live tissue models internally and externally to research partners throughout the San Antonio Metropolitan Area.
  • Apply advanced infection control principlesto execute the cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, and steam/ultrasonic sterilization of surgical instruments, maintaining a sterile surgical environment.
  • Identify, build, and organize highly specialized surgical instrument sets, ensuring all required specialty tools and monitors are prepared for unique surgical protocols.
  • Assemble and operate complex surgical equipment, including physiological monitors, anesthesia machines, electric/pneumatic saws, drills, defibrillators, and electro-surgical units.
  • Independently set up, operate, monitor, and adjust clinical hyperbaric and hypobaric chambersto meet parameters of clinical investigations and research protocols.
  • Coordinate with donating agencies to receive, store, and prepare cadavers for procedures; ensure all procedures are conducted with appropriate respect and in accordance with regulations.
  • Operate multiple imaging systems, including Digital X-Ray, Fluoroscopy (C-Arm), Computer Tomography (CT), Micro CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and Bioluminescence/Fluorescence systems.
  • Perform all required imaging to support cadaver protocols and prepare specimens for return transport to the donating agency upon project completion.
  • Assist in performing behavioral tests on research models utilizing various procedures as identified in specific study protocols.
  • Compile and enter research data into designated computer databases as required by specific study protocols.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials, graphics, and data summaries for scientific publication and professional presentations.
  • Wear and maintain Government-provided radiation dosimetry devices; comply with all radiation safety tracking requirements.
  • Apply knowledge of sound research design and implementationto collaborate with the multidisciplinary research team, identifying clinical/procedural problems and formulating effective solutions.
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

  • Requires an Associates degree in a biological science related discipline.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain current AALAS accreditation for laboratory animals and CITI training.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must provide proof of immunization, or immunity from or screening for the following diseases according to DHA guidelines equivalent to that provided to active work Armed Forces: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, Varicella, Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis, Tuberculosis (TB), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (Contract employee who has direct patient care) and influenza for all personnel.
  • Experience performing surgery and utilizing mathematics to calculate drug dosage.
  • Experience with infection control, relating to cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization in the surgical environment.
  • Experience in anesthesia, vascular line placement, and pre-anesthesia.
  • Experience in using imaging systems including digital X-Ray, computer tomography (CT), MicroCT, fluoroscopy, bioluminescence and fluorescence, and
    magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Experience in the use of hyper/hypobaric chambers in clinical investigations and research, including setup, monitoring, and adjusting these systems.
  • Experience in evaluating basic medical status of research subjects to allow coordination with attending staff to maintain health and welfare of research
    subjects.
  • Must be willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).

REQUIRED CITIZENSHIP AND CLEARANCE:

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a CAC card.
