Job Requirements

Data Engineer - Dialysis / ESRD - 100% Remote

Summary:

Innovative Renal Care (IRC) is seeking a hands-on, execution-focused Data Engineer to build, optimize, and maintain our operational data infrastructure and analytical platforms.

In this role, you will work closely with our Application Development and IT teams to design operational backend databases, construct REST API integrations, write optimized ETL/ELT pipelines, and support internal software systems. You are a practitioner who loves getting into the technical details - whether that means tuning a slow SQL/PySpark query, designing normalized and dimensional schemas, or implementing strict automated data quality checks for healthcare data.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates directly with Software/App Dev teams to design, build, and maintain operational database backends and REST API integrations for internal healthcare software applications.
  • Builds, monitors, and maintains resilient, automated ETL/ELT pipelines using Python, PySpark, dbt, and Cloud platforms (Azure / AWS / Snowflake).
  • Designs both normalized (3NF) relational database schemas for transactional applications and dimensional (Kimball/star-schema) models for analytics and BI reporting.
  • Proactively diagnoses and resolves performance bottlenecks across SQL queries, Snowflake workloads, and PySpark jobs using query profiling, indexing, repartitioning, and clustering techniques.
  • Implements robust error handling, automated alerting (Slack/PagerDuty/dbt tests), and dead-letter queue patterns to quickly debug and resolve upstream data anomalies with minimal downtime.
  • Ensures strict compliance with HIPAA and PHI requirements by implementing data masking, role-based access control (RBAC), and validation rules across all patient data pipelines.
  • Maintains clear technical documentation for data flows, database schemas, and API contracts.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience of hands-on, full-time experience building, deploying, and maintaining production data pipelines and backend databases in an enterprise or in-house product environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Python (or PySpark) and Advanced SQL (complex joins, CTEs, window functions, stored procedures, and query execution plan tuning).
  • Direct experience with modern cloud data warehousing tools such as Snowflake, dbt, or Azure Data Factory / Databricks.
  • Hands-on experience designing and supporting operational relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Azure SQL) and integrating with REST APIs.
  • Demonstrated experience handling sensitive healthcare/clinical data, protected health information (PHI), and adhering to HIPAA compliance standards. (Experience with ESRD, dialysis data, or EMR/EHR system integrations is a strong plus).
