Job Description:

As the Managing Attorney for one our in-house counsel legal departments, you will be primarily responsible for the litigation of insurance company workers' compensation claims and all aspects of the management of the staff attorneys and support staff in the office. Utilize your litigation experience and legal knowledge to represent insured employers in the litigation of workers' compensation claims, prepare legal correspondence, memorandums, briefs and pleadings and participate in the negotiation and settlements of litigated claims. In this position you will conduct depositions of claimants, insureds and expert witnesses. You will ensure compliance with Defense Counsel Guidelines as well as develop and maintain solid internal and external client relationships, perform legislative and/or regulatory research to support the General Counsel's Office and analyze and advise internal clients of developments in workers' compensation law and procedure.



Responsibilities:



  • Represent insured employers and PMA in litigation of workers' compensation claims.
  • Provide input on specific legislative/regulatory agenda for workers' compensation.
  • Respond to requests from claim personnel for legal advice and direction in support of handling workers' compensation claims.

  • Provide leadership and direct oversight for staff, including performance management, coaching, and professional development.

  • Assist with training claim personnel on various aspects of workers' compensation law, including litigation process and procedures.
  • Other duties as appropriate and relevant to the position.
  • Demonstrate commitment to Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and apply knowledge of compliance policies and procedures, standards and laws applicable to job responsibilities in the performance of work

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Licensed with the Pennsylvania Bar Association
  • Minimum of 10 years of workers' compensation litigation experience representing insured employers and/or carriers with a proven track record of providing quality and cost effective advocacy.

  • Experience supervising employees, delegating responsibilities, and driving team performance to meet organizational goals.

  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word and ability to use internal legal billing software/systems.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including ability to deliver client presentations and conduct training seminars.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail oriented, exercise good judgment, and balance multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively in either a self-directed or a collaborative environment.
  • Solid research, analytical and negotiation skills.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of workers' compensation law and litigation process and ability to effectively apply such knowledge in a variety of claims and business situations.
  • Strong familiarity with, and ability to apply, litigation management techniques.
  • Ability to travel to as needed.
