Position Summary
Under direct supervision of the BCH Clinical & Translational Research Unit (CTRU) lab supervisor, the primary on-site lab technician lab handles, processes and manages specimens entering the CTRU lab from research participants throughout the institution. In coordination with lab supervisor, assists in ensuring smooth specimen flow through CRU Lab by monitoring workload, turnaround time and staffing. Completes assigned tasks such as assisting with monitoring and maintenance of lab equipment, lab-related inquiries, and Clinical Research Operations (CRO) Continuous Quality Improvement projects and lab sample tracking database.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs specimen preparation, including check in specimens and verifying ID, identifying appropriate tests, evaluating specimen quality and test set up. Prepares tests for send out and special requests.
  • Provides courteous and timely customer service and support to clinicians and clinical research study teams with lab-related inquiries calling the lab.
  • In coordination with and under supervision of lab supervisor, investigates, manages, and communicates on-site lab specimen issues.
  • Facilitates coordination of study team drop-off and pick-up of lab samples.
  • Assists with laboratory processing intake and Epic order set lab implementation activities for new and existing clinical research protocols
  • Performs daily QC and routine evaluation of instrumentation such as centrifuges, refrigerators, and incubators.
  • Maintains workplace in a neat and orderly fashion. Monitors supply inventory to keep work area adequately stocked and orders as necessary.
  • Participates in Clinical Research Operations (CRO) Continuous Quality Improvement projects and metrics database for tracking of clinical research lab specimens.
  • Assists lab supervisor with management of relationships with lab vendors.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • High School diploma/GED
Experience:
  • 1 year relevant experience, lab processing experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and equipment.
  • Skills to read and understand instructions, add and subtract numbers, and make comparisons between numbers and letters.
  • Ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, greet visitors, explain hospital policies, and/or relay messages to appropriate personnel. This type of interaction requires courtesy and tact when dealing with patients, visitors and/or hospital employees. More sensitive situations may be referred to others as appropriate.

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
