THE POSITION

The Corrections Food Service Instructor position with the Department of Corrections (DOC) gives you the chance to make a meaningful difference each day. In this role, you guide inmate workers as they learn practical food service skills that support daily operations at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Camp Hill. Your steady leadership helps build a structured and productive kitchen environment where clear expectations and teamwork matter. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports food service operations while providing on-the-job instruction to inmate workers. The role helps maintain safe kitchen practices, prepares meals, and supports the daily work of the food service unit. As a Corrections Food Service Instructor, you will perform the following duties:

  • Food Preparation: Assist with preparing meals and guiding inmates in safe food production practices
  • Safety Oversight: Inspect kitchen areas and equipment to ensure proper sanitation and safe operation
  • Instruction and Training: Teach inmates proper techniques for food preparation, cleaning, baking, and equipment use
  • Inventory Control: Requisition and store food items while following first-in first-out procedures
  • Work Coordination: Plan work assignments and review performance of inmate workers
  • Kitchen Monitoring: Maintain care, custody, and control of inmates during work activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work shifts to be determined. You will have rotating days off. Shifts are awarded based on bidding and seniority.
    • Swing shift 4:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM
    • 2nd shift 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $49,010.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in food preparation, production, or service of a variety of complete meal menus in an institutional food service operation, food catering service, restaurant, or in a similar large-scale food production operation; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
