TheLine Apprentice position supports the operations process in providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers by learning a working knowledge of computer system, tools, equipment, and material. Employees in theLine Apprentice position will learn the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system. In addition to normal work hours, employees in the Line Apprentice position must be available to be on-call with a more experienced person, as required, and to work all hours, as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, during planned outages or emergency situations. Employees in theLine Apprentice position must learn to perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all company safety rules and procedures. Locations: Aon IN Ops Center - 5055 E Main St Avon, IN 46123 Bedford IN Ops Center - 2929 16th St Bedford, IN 47421 Bloomington IN Ops Center - 1100 W 2nd St. Bloomington, IN 47403 Kokomo Operations Center-1619 West Deffenbaugh Street Kokomo, IN 46902 Lafayette Operations Center - 3401 Greenbush St. Lafayette, IN 47905 Madison IN Service Center - 1110 Clifty Drive Madison, IN 47250 Noblesville Operations Center- 100 S Mill Creek Rd Noblesville, IN 46062 Seymour Operations Center - 1625 E Tipton St. Seymour, IN 47274 Vincennes Operations Center- 800 Old Wheatland Rd Vincennes, IN 47591 Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to: Constructs, maintains, and repairs electrical distribution systems, including overhead and underground lines Installs and repairs electrical equipment such as street lighting and load control devices, Constructs overhead and underground distribution lines based on engineering specifications, including setting poles, pulling cable, setting transformers, etc. Installs equipment such as transformers, capacitors, regulators, load control devices, meters, streetlights, safe lights, etc. Maintains and repairs equipment, e.g., checking equipment and performing preventative maintenance using, test equipment such as volt and amp meters to measure the performance of equipment Responds to trouble calls when equipment fails and/or electrical service is interrupted Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally Work environment ranges from indoors to outside in varying degrees of heat and cold weather conditions Emergency situations may require working at night and in inclement weather Subject to confined spaces (e.g., manholes, vaults, etc.) Shift work, overtime, weekend work Subject to periodic call-out duty Frequent travel Basic/Required Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Valid driver's license. Desired Qualifications: Certificate from Lineman's Training School or currently enrolled Certificate from Technical School Line program or currently enrolled Military experience Experience in the electric utility industry Training and/or work experience with climbing different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) Previous work experience or training working near power lines and electricity (residential, commercial, overhead lines, or underground lines) Experience with responding to natural disasters or emergency situations (storm response such as hurricanes, tornado, wind event, high water; emergency responses such as fires, auto accidents, etc.) Working Conditions Work environment ranges from indoors to outside in varying degrees of heat and cold weather conditions Emergency situations may require working at night and in inclement weather Subject to confined spaces (e.g., manholes, vaults, etc.) Shift work, overtime, weekend work Subject to periodic call-out duty Frequent travel Please Read: Steps in Duke Energy's Hiring Process Upon successfully submitting your application for this position, you will be invited to take the online test, the Modern Hire Virtual Assessment for Lineworker. You will have 72 hours to complete your assessment (online test) immediately following submission of your application. Ability to successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT). This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading. This position has a residency requirement. You must reside within a 30-mile or 30-minutes radius of the hiring operations site. New hires must meet these requirements by the end of their 9-month probationary period.
