Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs laboratory testing and specimen collection that support the delivery of high-quality patient care at Boynton Health, https://boynton.umn.edu/. This position performs phlebotomy, specimen processing, laboratory testing, quality control, instrument maintenance, and result verification using established laboratory procedures and diagnostic instrumentation. The Medical Laboratory Technician ensures accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory results while maintaining compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and safety standards.

Working collaboratively with providers and other healthcare professionals, this position supports the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illness through accurate laboratory testing and exceptional patient service. The Medical Laboratory Technician also contributes to laboratory quality initiatives, maintains laboratory inventory and equipment, supports clinical education activities, and promotes a safe, equitable, and respectful environment.

Overview of Job Responsibilities

Clinical Laboratory Services (85%)

  • Perform routine laboratory testing on blood, urine, and other body fluid specimens following established laboratory procedures and quality standards.
  • Perform venipuncture, capillary collection, and other specimen collection procedures while ensuring patient identification, specimen integrity, and patient safety.
  • Process, analyze, verify, and accurately report laboratory results within established turnaround times.
  • Perform and document quality control, calibration, and routine maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot testing procedures, equipment, and quality control issues; resolve routine problems and escalate complex issues as appropriate.
  • Operate laboratory analyzers and diagnostic equipment according to established procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Ensure proper specimen handling, labeling, storage, transport, and disposal in accordance with laboratory and biosafety standards.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation within the laboratory information system and electronic health record.
  • Consult with providers regarding specimen requirements, laboratory procedures, and test results as appropriate.
  • Identify abnormal or questionable results and follow established protocols to ensure accurate reporting and patient safety.

Laboratory Operations, Compliance, and Quality (15%)

  • Maintain laboratory inventory, supplies, reagents, and equipment; assist with ordering, receiving, stocking, and inventory control.
  • Complete billing documentation and ensure accurate laboratory coding and documentation.
  • Comply with Boynton Health policies and procedures and all applicable regulatory requirements, including CLIA, OSHA, HIPAA, infection prevention, and laboratory safety standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance, quality control, proficiency testing, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with laboratory inspections, accreditation activities, competency assessments, and regulatory readiness.
  • Participate in department meetings, required training, continuing education, and annual competency reviews.
  • Support the clinical education and orientation of laboratory students, volunteers, and new staff, as assigned.
  • Contribute to workflow improvements and service excellence initiatives that enhance patient care and laboratory efficiency.
  • Promote a safe, equitable, respectful, and inclusive environment in which concerns can be addressed effectively.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position and laboratory operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related scientific field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience consistent with University requirements.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or equivalent national certification preferred or required, depending on laboratory operational needs.
  • Experience performing clinical laboratory testing and specimen collection.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures, quality control practices, biosafety principles, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience operating laboratory instrumentation and laboratory information systems.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and standard computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience in an ambulatory, outpatient, hospital, or student health laboratory.
  • Experience performing phlebotomy.
  • Experience with automated laboratory analyzers and point-of-care testing.
  • Experience with quality assurance, quality control, and laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Experience using Epic and laboratory information systems.
  • Experience training laboratory students or new employees.
  • Experience working in an integrated healthcare or college health environment.

Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the laboratory and clinic for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand movements and fine motor tasks required for specimen collection and laboratory testing.
  • Ability to safely lift and move laboratory supplies and equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
  • Visual acuity sufficient to distinguish colors, read laboratory instrumentation, and accurately interpret laboratory data.
  • Ability to safely work with bloodborne pathogens, infectious materials, chemicals, and other laboratory hazards while using appropriate personal protective equipment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an outpatient clinical laboratory with routine exposure to biological specimens, infectious materials, chemicals, and laboratory equipment. The position requires regular use of laboratory analyzers, computers, laboratory information systems, and electronic health records. Strict adherence to laboratory safety procedures, infection prevention practices, and regulatory standards is required.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $27.00 - $34.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience.

Time Appointment: 100%-time Appointment (up to 40 hours per week); Monday through Friday.
