This position is responsible for supporting the anesthesia service of the Veterinary Medical Center and includes hands-on patient care, teaching clinical skills in professional student rotations and in laboratory sessions. Additional duties include maintaining facilities according to organizational cleanliness standards, ordering or stocking supplies and accurate, confidential record keeping. Other duties may be assigned. The specific duties and work schedule will vary based on current needs.

70%- Teaching/Training

  • Assist VMC leadership in identifying knowledge gaps of students, and staff
  • Answer questions and explain or demonstrate procedures and equipment for interns, residents, veterinary technicians, DVM students
  • Reinforce knowledge taught in the curriculum through cases and topics on clinics
  • Work with students, staff and clinicians in a respectful and positive manner
  • Lead student orientation on day one of rotation
  • Assist with teaching including presenting, facilitating, coordinating student topic rounds, labs as well as in clinical and didactic activities
  • Implementing structured training for DVM students
  • Provide constructive, respectful, direct and in-the-moment feedback to DVM students
  • Participate in cyclical reviews of feedback reports to identify trends and recommend/develop training content and procedure changes
  • Responsible for building individual knowledge and skills in the areas of instructional leadership and workplace training
  • Working with faculty to coordinate and schedule off clinic rotations for the advanced anesthesia students (AERC, Zoo cases, Labs)
  • Demonstrate and guide students through advanced skills if qualified / trained (epidurals, arterial catheters, difficult intubation cases).
  • Additional responsibility of overseeing students with more critical patients and higher ASA status
  • Identifies appropriate cases for students
  • Helps develop student schedule with floor runner to maximize student learning and flow for the day
  • Works with floor runner to schedule cases tailored to the individual interests and needs of the advanced students
  • Work with the advanced students to tailor an experience specific to their individual interests
  • Provides individualized and advanced "mini-rounds"
  • Assist in crafting and maintaining the Canvas sites for the the comparative and advanced anesthesia rotations
  • Helps create training documents and resources for DVM students
  • Receives accommodation letters from course coordinator and helps individualize workflow to students specific accommodations and making sure needs are met
  • Assists clinicians in creating and keeping direct written feedback on student performance
  • Helps enter and submit DVM student grades
  • Performs weekly check ins with faculty and residents to ensure students are progressing appropriately through the rotation.

25%- Clinical/Direct Patient Care

  • With the assistance of technician supervisors, direct and provide on-the-floor patient care and operational support in an assigned service
  • Responsible to ensure that all services and supplies are charged for according to hospital fee schedule

5%- Other Duties

  • Responsible for maintenance of specialized equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Clinician(s) and Director

Work Environment

  • This work is generally performed at The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, and at the Veterinary Medical Center
  • This work environment may included exposure to noise, bright/low lighting, temperature variations, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay and animal hair and dander

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours/week

Minimum/Required Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited Veterinary Technician program or equivalent, and certification/licensed as an MVMA/MAVT technician.
BA/BS plus at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years. Leadership and/or teaching experience required, along experience assisting licensed DVMs with veterinary medical procedures, including anesthesia, pain management, and emergency/critical care. Must demonstrate a strong customer service mindset and excellent interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Current VTS-Anesthesia certification or eligibility for VTS. Demonstrates knowledge of anesthesia and pain management, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to lead effectively within a hierarchical team structure. Advanced understanding of veterinary medical terminology, pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, and proper restraint and handling of both large and small animals. Prior Lead Technician and/or mentorship experience preferred.

Pay Range: $30.00 - $33.16/hr; depending on education/qualifications/experience
