Job Summary:

The Utility Worker, Grounds Services, under close supervision from Foreman, Assistant Foreman and Lead Workers, performs semi-skilled tasks below the journeyman level in the building trades and general landscape and grounds maintenance functions as assigned, including but not limited to those listed below. The position maintains assigned work areas and related equipment in a clean, safe and operable condition.

Specific Responsibilities:

Landscape and ground maintenance:

  • General landscape maintenance: lawn mowing, weeding, watering, and assisting groundskeepers with cleanup following pruning of different plant materials. General landscape cleanup and leaf removal;
  • Refuse removal: emptying garbage cans and picking up trash from campus areas;
  • Small equipment operation: lawn-mowing equipment snow blowers, leaf blowers. May be required to drive University vehicles
  • Turf maintenance: mowing, edging of sidewalks and watering;
  • Flower bed maintenance: assisting groundskeepers with weeding beds and watering;
  • Special event setups for University departments.
  • Landscape construction: under close supervision by groundskeepers, assists with tree and shrub planting, site preparation, plant removal and general cleanup
  • Snow and ice removal: clearing snow and ice from walks and steps, small snow broom operation and other related tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)

  • High school diploma or the equivalent combination of educational training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • Must maintain a valid Driver's license.
  • Must provide dependable personal vehicle and purchase University parking permit (Evanston campus only).

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Physical ability to work in cramped quarters, climb ladders and work from equipment high off ground level. Physical ability to lift and maneuver heavy weights up to 50 pounds. Dexterity necessary for the use of tools, manipulation of materials, and the operation of motorized equipment.
  • General knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods, and safety practices related to building trades or landscape maintenance and grounds services.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)

  • Some experience performing semi-skilled manual tasks related to building trades and grounds or one year of professional landscape or grounds maintenance experience, some post high school course work related to horticulture, and familiarity with the operation of associated equipment are preferred.
  • Must be a member of Local 681 or join after one month of employment.
  • General knowledge of the tools, equipment, methods, and safety practices related to building trades or landscape maintenance and grounds services.
  • Physical ability to work in cramped quarters, climb ladders and work from equipment high off ground level. Physical ability to lift and maneuver heavy weights up to 50 pounds. Dexterity necessary for the use of tools, manipulation of materials, and the operation of motorized equipment.

Target hiring pay for this position will be $25.23 per hour as determined by the Local 681 CBA. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
