Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior IT Accessibility Specialist (Application Developer I) in the Enterprise Application Services ( EAS)/ Office of the CIO with the Office of Information Technology ( OIT).

The Application Developer I position is responsible for reviewing information technology procurement contracts and other projects with accessibility implications. This position works to ensure information technology and accessibility standards are met and that contract terms further the University's interests. This position will also ensure contracts are in compliance with appropriate laws, regulations, and University policies/procedures. Additionally, the incumbent will provide training and outreach, assist in the development of a risk-based approach to contract review, and develop associated assessment tools and other resources. This position will report to the Director, IT Accessibility, and will work closely with IT procurement, Rutgers Access and Disability Resources, and unit level IT purchasers. This position will work with IT staff in schools, colleges, and departments on the selection and use of hardware and software assistive technologies. This position will create awareness around IT accessibility and disability issues related to IT systems and processes. The incumbent should have the ability to identify accessibility issues within products and services while providing guidance to vendors and purchasers regarding compliance. This position will develop and deliver training to members of the University community relating to product and service accessibility. This position will serve as a resource for the campus community on IT disability issues and will conduct educational events to improve the University community's understanding of disability issues and will have an obligation to advance compliance.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Review University IT assets, such as sites, systems, and applications for accessibility issues and recommend remediations, to provide a more accessible and inclusive experience.
  • Provides first and second level end user accessibility support, including the facilitation of the University's accessibility barrier reporting.
  • Performs accessibility testing, reviews vendor documentation, and makes recommendations on potential information technology purchases.
  • Develop and deliver training workshops and educational programs to increase awareness of accessibility within the University community.
  • Understand and adhere to Rutgers compliance standards as they appear in RBHS' Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field, plus three (3) years of experience in the field of accessibility.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1.
  • Application of disability law as it applies to digital accessibility and Section 504/508.
  • Best practices for accessible websites and applications.

  • PDF accessibility.
  • Demonstrated effective performance in a team-oriented environment.
  • Accessibility auditing, consulting, and training experience.
  • Confident in presenting ideas and designs.
  • Strong technical writing skills: ability to create compelling, detail-oriented documentation that sets up design, engineering, and testing teams for success.
  • Passion for product process and innovation.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service.
  • Great organizational skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trusted Tester or other accessibility related certifications/credentials.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience with web technologies (HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Xml, and Web content management systems).
  • Assistive technology experience, or interest in learning assistive technology tools.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages desirable (PHP, JavaScript).
  • Experience developing and delivering training workshops and webinars.
  • Analytical skills for problem resolution and complex contract analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience of web development platforms (Drupal, WordPress, etc.).
