Description Summary:
Springfield Inc. anticipates an opening in the Engineering department for an Optical Metrology Specialist. This role is critical to ensuring dimensional accuracy and compliance throughout the manufacturing processfrom incoming materials through finished products. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise in advanced optical scanning systems with a deep understanding of design specifications to support quality assurance, root cause analysis, and prototype development. Working at the intersection of precision measurement and engineering problem-solving, the specialist plays a key role in maintaining the highest standards of dimensional integrity while collaborating across R&D, production, and supplier teams.
- Sets up, calibrates, and operates ATOS scanning equipment.
- Creates and implements quality and inspection plans to generate digital twins of scanned hardware, references CAD models to generate heat maps of differences, and writes analysis reports.
- Develops and adjusts ATOS measurement programs.
- Generates digital twins of components using Blue Light Scanning technology.
- Creates comparative heat maps using CAD files and scan data to support root cause analysis.
- Designs fixturing for component scanning as needed.
- Manages and prioritizes R&D scan queue, ensuring proper documentation and timely execution.
- Generates reports with heat maps to address technical questions.
- Collaborates across all functional areas and with suppliers to relay information and interpret measurement results.
- Inspects parts using various methods: height stand, IM, CMM, etc.
- Assists with other R&D and incoming inspection tasks as needed.
Requirements:
- Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Metrology, Quality Assurance, or related field required. Bachelor's degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in quality inspection, metrology, or 3D scanning including experience with blue light or optical scanning systems preferred.
- Background in manufacturing or R&D environment helpful.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and customer drawings.
- Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Proven experience inspecting parts and components.
- Self-motivated with ability to work independently and lead small teams.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to document and explain complex technical results.
- Ability to safely handle firearms and ammunition.
- Experience with Zeiss scan systems (or similar) and robotics, Geomagic, Solid Works desirable.
- Preference for experience with Zeiss Inspect, Geomagic, and Solid Works.
- Basic equipment skills include: calipers, micrometers, height gages, thickness gages, radius gages, Keyence IM.
