Job Title: Animal Technician

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Job Summary:
Supports biomedical research programs by providing comprehensive laboratory animal care services, including animal procurement, husbandry, sanitation, health monitoring, and facility maintenance. The Animal Technician is responsible for daily care and monitoring of laboratory animals, including rodents, in compliance with institutional policies and federal/state regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily animal husbandry duties including feeding, watering, cage changing, and room sanitation.
  • Clean and sterilize cages, racks, and equipment using cage washers and autoclaves.
  • Monitor animal health and report concerns to veterinary and compliance staff.
  • Maintain accurate records including feed logs, health surveillance reports, environmental logs, and animal inventory records.
  • Support animal housing operations across multiple research facilities.
  • Maintain animal care areas according to SOPs and regulatory requirements.
  • Use computers and handheld devices for recordkeeping, barcode scanning, email communication, and electronic reporting.
  • Identify and report operational or compliance issues promptly.
  • Perform assigned technical procedures supporting research activities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1 year of animal handling or laboratory animal sanitation/equipment operations experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry, feeding, caging, and sanitation procedures.
  • Experience identifying animal health concerns and reporting findings appropriately.
  • Familiarity with disinfection processes, cage washers, and autoclaves.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and regulatory compliance standards.
  • Basic computer proficiency including email and electronic record systems.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a regulated environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, bend, squat, kneel, and move continuously for up to 7 hours/day.
  • Ability to push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs safely.
  • Ability to wear required PPE including gowns, gloves, masks, eye protection, and respirators as needed.
  • Compliance with workplace safety policies including no eating, drinking, or smoking in animal areas.

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of training equivalent to Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification preferred.
  • One year of laboratory animal care experience OR two years of general animal care experience appropriate to the role.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Shift: 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
