HJF is seeking a Scientist II to develop and supervise research projects. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of USU Department of Anesthesiology / Defense & Veterans Consortium for Integrative Pain Management (DVCIPM). This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of qualitative science, healthcare innovation, and artificial intelligence.

We are seeking a Scientist with strong qualitative research expertise to support an innovative healthcare research initiative focused on the development of patient-centered clinical support tools (CSTs), including AI-enabled solutions. This role will contribute to literature synthesis, framework development, and qualitative research protocol design aimed at improving patient-friendly communication of spinal radiological reports.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

This is a temporary, part time position scheduled for up to 15 hours per week.


  • Conduct literature reviews consistent with PRISMA extension guidelines for scoping reviews using Covidence.

  • Identify, compare, and synthesize frameworks for development of patient-centered clinical support tools with and without AI.
  • Evaluate frameworks related to:
    • Patient-centered clinical support tool development
    • Clinician feedback and workflow integration
    • Evidence-based practices and machine learning approaches in CST development
  • Collaborate with project investigators to synthesize findings into a comprehensive framework for AI-enabled CST development.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation and dissemination of findings.
  • Develop a qualitative research protocol investigating patient preferences for translation of spinal radiological reports into patient-friendly language.
  • Support qualitative study design, including interview guides, thematic analysis planning, and patient-centered methodology.
  • Collaborate using Covidence and shared research platforms, including Google Drive.

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5-8 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Qualitative research experience required.
  • Experience completing literature reviews.
  • Decision clinical support tool development.
  • Previous experience with AI support tool preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a T1/Public Trust Background Check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The hourly pay range for this position is $44.76-$58.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
