Molding Technician (Set-up Tech)

SUMMARY:

The Molding Technician is responsible for the output and efficiency in their assigned area. They will pull/set injection molds and get molds ready for changeovers in injection molding machines for startup by process technicians. This position will perform color and order changes along with associated line clearance activities. The Technician will also set up machine auxiliary equipment to ensure proper part containment during production runs. A successful Molding Technician will also be required to plan and perform a sequence of operations while assisting with making decisions involving the running or stopping of molds and or machines. The position also plays a key part in ensuring molded part quality by completing basic visual inspections of parts as they are produced.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Complete daily PM checklists on assigned machines.
  • Visually inspect and look at molded parts within assigned area to ensure quality standards are being met
  • Work with and help train members of the team assigned to their respective area
  • Set-up machines, heater boxes, robots, cooling systems, valve gate systems to achieve standard operating efficiency.
  • Pull and set molds as instructed using overhead crane.
  • Perform all color/order changes daily as scheduled
  • Prepare molds for changeover in injection molding machines.
  • Adhere to daily molding schedule regarding restarts, shutdowns and change overs.
  • Set up all auxiliary equipment to ensure effective part containment prior to start up
  • Maintain/Clean auxiliary equipment being used for production machines
  • Perform proper line clearances as required
  • Perform simple machine maintenance and processing changes.
  • Assist with maintaining machine uptime by restarting molding presses as directed
  • Operate forklifts as required.
  • Maintain 5s standards and housekeeping within assigned area
  • Help with the scanning and moving of materials being produced in area
  • Follow all safety regulations and LOTO guidelines to ensure compliance.
  • Must be able to fill out production reports, records and operate computer
  • Complete other duties assigned by supervisor/lead
  • Must follow all work rules and policies.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High School diploma and or equivalent

Must have a high degree of knowledge about molding machines, their operation, set up, care and maintenance to be able to set up molds and related equipment in order to produce quality parts at production standards.

Must have some knowledge of various plastic materials as well as hydraulic, electrical and mechanical understanding.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percentage.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
