Job Description

Position Summary:

Rockwell Automation is looking for a Manager, Software Engineering to lead teams delivering industry-leading capabilities within FactoryTalk Design Studio, helping customers improve engineering productivity, quality, and speed.

You will lead an organization of software engineers that includes both individual contributors and people managers. You will set clear goals, establish scalable engineering practices, and partner across Product Management, UX, and Architecture to deliver reliable, secure, and maintainable software. You will balance near-term execution with long-term technical health, ensuring teams deliver with high velocity and quality while promoting an inclusive culture. You will also stay current on engineering best practices and the latest trends, especially generative AI, and increase adoption to accelerate development and scale its use across the software development lifecycle.

This is a people-leadership role with accountability for delivery, operational excellence, and talent development. You will ensure teams have clear priorities, appropriate resourcing, and effective execution rhythms. You will stay technically engaged through architectural and design reviews, risk management, and removal of delivery impediments, while empowering leads and managers to make daily technical decisions.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Lead a software engineering organization (individual contributors and people managers) by setting clear goals and accountability for delivery and outcomes
  • Develop managers and engineers through regular feedback, performance management, and career development planning
  • Manage delivery across multiple teams, driving predictable execution from requirements through release with scope, risk, and dependency management
  • Accountable for overall program performance, partnering across engineering, product, UX, and other partners to align execution, manage dependencies, and ensure outcomes beyond the teams directly reporting to you
  • Partner with Architecture and senior technical leaders to guide architectural decisions, balancing scalability, security, performance, usability, and maintainability
  • Establish and improve engineering practices across teams, including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and DevSecOps
  • Champion the evaluation and responsible adoption of generative AI capabilities (tools, workflows, and governance) to improve developer productivity and quality, and to grow usage across teams throughout the software development lifecycle
  • Ensure solutions meet Rockwell Automation standards for quality, security, and compliance
  • Build an outstanding organization by managing important metrics, improving reliability and supportability, and leading continuous improvement

The Essentials - You Will Have:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of relevant work experience
  • Legal authorization to work in the US is required - we will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, not now or in the future, for this job opening.

The Preferred - You Might Also Have:

  • Typically requires 5+ years experience managing software engineers and engineering leads in a product development environment
  • Demonstrated people leadership experience, including hiring, coaching, performance management, and developing high-performing teams
  • Background in software engineering, including modern object-oriented and cloud-native architectures
  • Working knowledge of generative AI concepts is important. This includes understanding common developer-use cases, such as code assistance, test generation, and code review support. Additionally, it involves being able to evaluate tools, manage risk, and guide responsible adoption.
  • Experience delivering customer-facing software products
  • Experience ramping up quickly in new technical domains and lead decisions with confidence, even under ambiguity.
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear guidance for teams and partners
  • Experience leading multiple teams and managing other people managers
  • Familiarity with developer productivity tools, design environments, or industrial software
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure), APIs, and distributed systems
  • Experience with SAFe and Agile software development methodologies
  • Prior experience with FactoryTalk, automation software, or industrial engineering workflows
  • Experience communicating with partners, providing transparency on progress, risks, tradeoffs, and outcomes

What We Offer:

  • Health Insurance including Medical, Dental and Vision
  • 401k
  • Paid Time off
  • Parental and Caregiver Leave
