What Your Job Will Be Like

If so, you could be the highly motivated Mechanical Engineer we seek. The Electronics Fabrication Department is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join their diverse and passionate team of high performing individuals striving to achieve success while making a difference for our nation's security. The Engineer's principal responsibilities will include supporting design and fabrication of products for various programs including nuclear deterrence and other national security projects that support high consequence applications. Additionally, this position may require participation in a rotation program for a period of time within the Weapon and Design Assurance center, the goal of which is to expose the successful candidate to a broader set of technical work within the center.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design various electronic hardware including coax, round wire, and flex cables, as well as printed circuit boards
  • Develop assembly and inspection hardware including fixtures and gages
  • Research new technologies around electronic products
  • Utilize advanced manufacturing processes, such as additive manufacturing and automation to fabricate electronic products
  • Develop methods for automation assistance of repetitive low skill tasks for product completion.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, technologist, tradespeople, and apprentices in the successful execution of mission critical deliverables
  • Collaborate with Production Agencies to incorporate advanced technologies for manufacturability
  • Investigate issues on the manufacturing floor and lead fabricators in troubleshooting interconnects as well as their corresponding test equipment
  • Provide evaluation and technical analysis on large amounts of test data
  • Write technical reports, perform cost estimates, work manufacturing issues, and present results/findings
  • Provide quality products with supporting qualification evidence that satisfy customer requirements within cost/schedule constraints
  • Implement sound mechanical engineering principles on high-reliability and high-consequence cable assemblies and interconnects

Some travel may be required.

Due to the nature of the work, this candidate must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Mechanical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation)
  • Experience with mechanical engineering and product realization in the NNSA complex
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience with IPC standards, specifically IPC-A-610 and IPC/WHMA-A-620
  • Mechanical modeling experience with PTC CREO
  • Experience in the application of engineering principles and the scientific method
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, to include additive manufacturing and automation/robotics
  • Experience with PCB design and/or fabrication
  • Demonstrated application of design guides/specifications (e.g., design for manufacturability, design for environmental specifications)
  • Experience teaming, collaborating, and negotiating with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to identify design/requirement shortcomings, articulate impacts, and drive resolution with customers
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance
About Our Team

Electronic Fabrication Department, 02636, provides Sandia with manufacturing technology in packaging of prototype electronic systems through capabilities that include product design, fabrication, inspection, testing and installation. The department supports Sandia engineering by identifying and meeting customer requirements for the design to application of customized products, through the use of effective and efficient processes.

Posting Duration

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
