Hourly Pay Range:

$35.16 - $54.50 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights:

  • Position: Histology Supervisor
  • Location: Elmhurst Hospital 155 E. Brush Hill Road Elmhurst, IL.
  • FTE: Full-time 1.0 FTE
  • Hours: 7:30am-4pm -flexibility required for work hours; Some weekend shifts may be required

Brief Overview: Responsible for coordinating and directing activities of subordinates engaged in performing routine and non-routine laboratory analyses in assigned area of responsibility. In doing so, ensures quality standards relating to delivery of laboratory services are achieved by reviewing test results obtained and directing the repeat of abnormal results. Monitors maintenance of existing equipment and service contracts for equipment to ensure accuracy of test results, coordinates departmental supply acquisition and utilization and ensure maintenance of proper stock levels. Ensures that all staff continually demonstrates excellent customer service.

What will you need:

  • HT(ASCP) certification
  • A minimum of 5 years of hands-on histology experience
    Proficient in all areas of histology, including the gross room.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills are essential
  • Prior supervisory or lead experience is preferred

What will you do:

  • In collaboration with Manager, oversees and directs work of assigned subordinates engaged in performing histological processing and tests to obtain data for disease diagnosis and treatment.
  • Interviews, hires, orients, trains, schedules, evaluates the performance of and, when necessary, disciplines personnel. Provides direction, as necessary, to staff regarding sensitive and/or complex work, related problems, resolves complaints and responds to inquires regarding department operations. Establishes section work schedules for assigned staff to ensure adequate section coverage and revises schedules to cover absences.
  • Ensures all employees are meeting Customer Service standards. Regularly reviews Customer Service goals with employees on an individual basis. Communicates trends to staff and works with staff toward improving deficiencies. Resolves all patient complaints pertaining to subordinate area. Works with management of other departments when patient complaints extend into other areas. Develops new ways to improve customer service and gets subordinate staff actively involved in related activities
  • Gathers data regarding projected personnel, supply and equipment needs in order to provide input into development of Laboratory/Pathology policies, procedures and operating budget. Administers and monitors adherence to same.
  • Coordinates, trains, and evaluates students in clinical practicum program
  • Writes and reviews department procedure manuals. Updates procedures according to CAP standards. Maintains department records and procedures in accordance with CAP and/or other regulatory requirements.
  • Ensures maintenance of adequate levels of supplies necessary to perform clinical laboratory tests. Evaluates quality and cost effectiveness of new or replacement supplies and equipment, and makes recommendations to Manager regarding acquisition of same.
  • Ensures department equipment is maintained in safe operating condition and contacts Hospital or outside repair personnel as appropriate. Maintains records of service contracts, equipment repairs and the like.
  • Maintains all section records relating to operation of same such as quality control and productivity statistics, proficiency surveys, incident reports and the like. Reviews and summarizes records and prepares reports for management's review.
  • Provides advice and direction to section personnel concerning problems encountered or more complex/sensitive tests. Explains or demonstrates appropriate techniques or methods.
  • Reviews all abnormal and atypical test results, ensures testing procedures are carried out in accordance with established standards and notifies Manager, Director or Pathologist of such results.
  • Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like as allowable.
  • Participates in continuing education programs, in-services, lab meetings and various committees such as safety and quality improvement.
  • Maintains knowledge of Performance Improvement tools and utilizes such to solve everyday issues and maintain quality processes and improvements in section.
