From delivering safe drinking water and treating wastewater responsibly to developing sustainable water supplies and protecting lives and property through flood control, your work will directly support public health, environmental sustainability, and infrastructure resilience. In the role of Senior Communications Strategist, we'll count on you to:
Support technical teams in using clear, effective communication with customers, stakeholders, and regulators.
- Support global and local communication strategies by working closely with engineering teams, environmental specialists, and marketing and communications partners.
- Collaborate with engineers, architects, designers, and other experts to develop clear and accurate content, including white papers, feature articles, thoughtleadership pieces, and social media posts.
- Lead the creation of collateral and campaign materials for capital projects, public engagement activities, regulatory updates, and emergency communications.
- Research, write, and edit project narratives and case studies that clearly explain water and utility projects for public audiences.
- Deliver employee training on communication best practices-helping technical staff communicate clearly with customers, stakeholders, and regulators.
- Monitor industry trends, regulatory updates, and communication best practices across the water and utilities sector and share insights with the team.
- Support technical staff in using clear communication practices when engaging with customers, stakeholders, and regulators.
- Lead event planning and stakeholder engagement for public meetings, regulatory hearings, community workshops, and internal employee events.
- Help shape the scope, schedule, and budget for communication activities supporting water and utility projects.
- Bring creative, practical ideas that help simplify complex topics for public and stakeholder audiences.
- Mentor and support junior strategists and communications staff.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in closely related field
- Previous consulting and/or water industry experience.
Required Qualifications
- A minimum of 7 years experience in a communications field of expertise: social media, event planning, community engagement, target marketing, descriptive writing, public involvement, etc.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Self-motivated and ability to work independent with multiple teams as well as team oriented
- Great interpersonal and communication skills - positive outlook and attitude
- High aptitude for managing and solving tactical issues
- An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
- Comfortable and competent while working with senior leaders and managing cross-functional efforts
- Demonstrated ability to operate both strategically and tactically in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
- Committed to quality, continuous improvement, and HDR values
- Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite - InDesign
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
