Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The North Carolina Botanical Garden ( NCBG) has been a leader in native plant conservation, horticulture, and education in the southeastern United States for more than 50 years. As part of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, we further the University's tripartite teaching, research, and public service mission through our own mission to cultivate connections between plants, people, and place through science, engagement, and conservation. As a garden focused on conserving the biodiversity of southeastern native plants, we recognize that just as biodiversity is critical to a healthy ecosystem, diversity in people and perspectives makes our organization and community stronger. NCBG is committed to creating an environment in our gardens and natural areas where everyone's voice is heard, and everyone feels safe and welcome.
Position Summary
The Community Gardens Intern will support the North Carolina Botanical Garden's Community Gardens Program, which includes two sites on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus: the Carolina Community Garden and Edible Campus UNC. These programs promote sustainable agriculture, food access, and experiential learning.

Through hands-on participation in garden maintenance-including planting, weeding, harvesting, watering, composting, and mowing-interns will gain experience in summer organic vegetable production and sustainable gardening practices. The position will also support distribution efforts, learning how community gardens address food insecurity and promote equitable access to fresh, healthy food.

This internship is primarily outdoors and physically active, with some computer-based work that supports program communication and outreach, including assistance with social media. Interns will also gain experience in team-based collaboration, independent task management, as well as interacting with community members, volunteers, and campus partners in a public-facing program.

By the end of the internship, students can expect to:
* Develop foundational skills in organic vegetable production and pollinator-friendly gardening
* Gain experience managing edible landscapes in community settings
* Strengthen communication, time management, and problem-solving skills
* Contribute meaningfully to food access and distribution efforts on campus

This internship is well suited for students interested in careers related to horticulture, environmental studies, sustainability, food systems, public gardens, or community engagement.
