Position Summary
The University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Emergency Medicine has an opportunity to join our academic Physician

faculty team as a non-tenured Assistant/Associate/Professor in a leadership position as Director of Emergency Medicine Operations.

In addition to working clinically in the UI Health Emergency Department, this leadership position will include:

monitoring of metrics that assess progress toward the goal and objectives of UI Health. This includes oversight of all activities related to the delivery of patient care, quality assurance/quality improvement, risk management, patient flow and efficiency, scheduling, policies and procedures implementation, working closely with many clinical stakeholders physicians, advanced practice providers and liaison to UI Hospital Administration/Nursing Administration, Emergency Medicine Services (EMS), and the community.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Clinical shifts in the Emergency Department Collaboration with hospital leaders related to regulatory, EMTALA, HIPPA, Stark and Joint Commission Participation in QA/QI and Risk Management program Educate clinical staff on policies/procedures, share information, assist with new physician orientation Monitor and expedite patient flow Lead monthly faculty meetings Prepare for and participate in accreditation and certification surveys in ED Maintain clinical schedule
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Director of Clinical Operations - UI Health
    The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago, is seeking a highly motivated non-tenured Emergency Physician leader for the position of Director of Clinical Operations at our UI Health Emergency Department. UI Health is a quaternary hospital that is a STEMI, Comprehensive Stoke Center with nationally ranked service lines in Transplant, Ophthalmology, Neurosurgery and Oncology. Our department strives for excellence in time-sensitive care as well as significant contributions to Social Emergency Medicine; with a commitment to diverse patient populations and multidisciplinary engagement that empowers care of patients and their communities in the State of Illinois.

    Key duties include:
    Serve as a physician expert in ED clinical operations, management, team building and leadership
    Implement and monitor strategic goals that focus on clinical and service to improve throughput metrics and care pathways to provide exceptional care to our patients
    Represent the department in the redesign and expansion of our existing ED (currently in the early design phase)
    Promote innovation and collaboration with key internal and external stakeholders

    Minimum Qualifications
    Physician (MD or DO) must be board certified in Emergency Medicine.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Preferred relevant leadership experience in the management of an emergency department in a complex academic setting.

    Some research experience and good writing skills are desired.

    Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
    Board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine

    Preferred Qualification:
    Strong skills in clinical practice management
    Experience in the management of an Emergency Department in an academic setting
