Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Energy Services Department consists of five groups: (1) Cogeneration Systems (generates electricity and steam, and the distribution of steam throughout campus and UNC Hospitals); (2) Electric Distribution Systems (distribution of electrical power throughout campus); (3) Chilled Water Systems (producing and distributing chilled water throughout campus); (4) Water, Wastewater and Stormwater (for the use and conservation of water, as well as the proper management of stormwater and runoff); and (5) Administration (provides GIS, SCADA, coordination of operational information technologies, strategic planning, and management functions).

Together these five groups provide safe, reliable, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective steam, electricity, chilled water, sanitary sewer, reclaimed water, and potable water utility services to the University's campus.

Electric Distribution Systems' primary purpose is the distribution of electricity to the various buildings on the University campus and to the UNC Hospitals. This is accomplished through a complex system of 12kV underground circuits in duct banks run all over campus, which is controlled and protected by a modern relay and control system.
Position Summary
A SIGN-ON BONUS OF $7,500 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION PAID IN 2 INSTALMENTS WITHIN TWELVE (12) MONTHS OF HIRE: $3,750 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $3,750 12-MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.

This position serves as the Engineer who is responsible for planning and maintaining the entire campus electrical distribution system network. The overall responsibilities include maintenance, quality assurance of as-built information, administrator of the campus short circuit model, provides faults studies to engineering firms, and the Electrical Distribution Systems ( EDS) representative for all facilities capital projects designing/planning activities.

This position also needs to be familiar with the Geographic Information System ( GIS), EDS switching procedures, working knowledge from the IBM Maximo system (working management system, and the ability to work with contractors on the EDS system.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in the engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Four-year degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university. Specialty in power is preferred.
* At least Two-years' experience working with a utility electrical system.
* Specific knowledge, skills and abilities in electric distribution systems based on the construction practices, and operations are preferable.
* Eligible to take the NC Professional Engineering License Exam within Two years from date of hire.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
This position requires bending, stooping, climbing/working from high ladders/scaffolding, working on hands and knees, working with arms/hands above head for long periods of time and working with large pieces of equipment, as well as, moving/lifting to 50 lbs. and other physical activities.

The environmental conditions vary tremendously from air conditioning and heat to dusty, hot, humid, and cold conditions. This position will be required to work in all conditions for various lengths of time depending on the operational requirements. This position will work in an industrial environment. This position could be exposed to high voltage equipment, heights, and manholes with water in them.

Duties for this position are performed during normal work hours (Monday through Friday 7am-4pm). This is a full-time permanent position. The position must respond to electrical distribution problems any time outside of the normal work schedule including nights, weekends and/or holidays. This is a critical position. This position is considered an Emergency Duty Position and must report during periods of adverse weather or other University emergency. This position is considered a Communicable Disease Mandatory and must report during a pandemic or other health emergency.

Workloads may increase unexpectedly. This position must be able to react to these changes and re-set priorities to meet work load.

**ELIGIBILITY FOR SIGN-ON BONUS

The selected candidate for this position may be eligible for a sign-on bonus. Qualified applicants must apply and be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act.

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week).
