About this unit:

The Neuro Critical Care Unit is an Intensive care floor within the Meijer Heart Center at Butterworth hospital. The Neuro ICU is part of the Comprehensive Stroke Center at the Medical Center, and it is West Michigan's largest stroke center. We specialize in the care of patients with stroke or other neurological conditions. These conditions include Hemorrhagic stroke, Ischemic stroke, seizures, and Hydrocephalus with critical care needs. Our nurses are part of a collaborative team and work alongside our nurse techs, intensivists, APPs, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, chaplains, and secretaries to provide specialized care to everyone. This team of nurses has worked to develop a culture of collaboration, kindness, teamwork, and learning. Nurses stay because they love the people they work with and in turn, have a very low turnover rate.

Scope of work

Taking care of 6-12 patients per shift, Critical Care Bedside responsibilities, including ambulating patients, monitoring patients vitals, blood sugar, responding to call lights for other needs, hygiene/bed bathing, wound and catheter care, EKG's, Charting, transport to other units after recovery, placing ART/SWAN lines, and sometimes floated to other units to do safety sitter/1:1 shift.

Scheduling Requirements: During training plan on daytime 7am-7:30pm shifts, after multiple weeks of daytime training NT's begin working the shift they were hired for, typically nights 7pm-7:30am.

Orientation

Orientation for the first 3-4 weeks in this unit requires daytime orientation including classroom and clinical training shifts. Then becomes regular night shifts.

Qualifications

  • Required High School Diploma or equivalent
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
  • Experience in direct patient care is preferred
