The Process Engineer - Furnaces will support the design, installation, and ongoing operation of multiple manufacturing process areas and may act as the responsible engineer for the design, implementation, and operational performance of assigned processes. The role also involves researching and developing new or improved manufacturing methods, conducting testing, monitoring production performance, and troubleshooting process variations. Ensuring the safe operation and regulatory compliance of processes and equipment across assigned areas is a key responsibility. This role provides direct support to the Furnace Team.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform engineering activities supporting the design, procurement, installation, and operation of multiple manufacturing process areas as assigned. These may include ADUN production, organic solution preparation, solution gelation, solvent washing, particle drying, coating and layer application, graphite matrix fabrication, overcoating, fuel core and green pebble pressing, compact pressing, shaping, heat treatment, quality control operations, industrial and radioactive waste processing, and uranium recovery systems.
  • Develop detailed specifications for process equipment and collaborate with equipment vendors to ensure all critical design requirements are met prior to delivery.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to support the design, fabrication, delivery, installation, and startup of process equipment.
  • Conduct research activities to develop new manufacturing processes and enhance existing production methods.
  • Establish methods and procedures for the safe and efficient handling and processing of solid, liquid, and gaseous chemicals and materials.
  • Design and plan equipment layouts, particularly for new processes, products, or customer-driven manufacturing requirements.
  • Partner with research and development teams to transition laboratory-scale processes into pilot-scale and full production operations.
  • Collaborate with regulatory and safety teams to develop procedures for personnel working with hazardous chemicals, processes, or equipment.
  • Work with regulatory teams to define and implement appropriate safety controls within process areas.
  • Support compliance efforts by working with regulatory teams to ensure adherence to environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Provide engineering support for waste permitting activities.
  • Execute testing and monitor process performance throughout production operations.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing process issues, monitor deviations from established process controls, and recommend corrective actions to reduce or eliminate variances.
  • Maintain and regularly update master inventories of chemical inputs, outputs, waste streams, and all process equipment across assigned areas.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and clear communication in all forms of internal and external interactions.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by management.

Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field is required.
  • Ten or more years of relevant work experience is preferred; advanced degrees may substitute for a portion of the experience requirement.
  • Demonstrated experience with CAD tools and the development or interpretation of P&IDs is required.
  • Proven experience with the design, specification, procurement, installation, and operation of industrial equipment is required.

Location/Work Arrangement:

  • Onsite position in Oak Ridge, TN.
  • Full-time, exempt position based on a 40-hour work week.
