What you'll be doing...

Verizon is seeking an experienced and talented attorney to join the Verizon Privacy and Security Legal Team. Verizon is looking for a Counsel to join a team of lawyers supporting our security organization. As Counsel, you will work with an internal team in handling and responding to complex and escalated civil and criminal legal process matters across Verizon's line of business. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with criminal and civil subpoenas and other federal and state legal process, such as search warrants, court orders, and wiretaps. You must be comfortable liaisoning with state, local, and federal law enforcement entities and prosecutors. You will provide advice and support to the security organization on compliance with security-related laws and regulations and company policies and procedures. You will also provide legal advice to the company's product teams on the Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), the Wiretap Act, and CALEA. In addition, you will provide legal advice on certain cybersecurity-related matters, including those related to fraud. You will also provide legal advice on physical security matters. This work involves navigating a fast-paced environment, while working collaboratively with security, cybersecurity, and line of business teams, as well as policy, regulatory, privacy, and legislative teams. The ideal candidate will have a strong legal background, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong research and analytical skills, and prior experience analyzing legal issues under ECPA, the Wiretap Act, and/or CALEA.

Responsibilities of the job include:

  • Helping administer efficient and compliant handling of legal requests, including but not limited to requests for information (subpoenas, court orders, etc.) from law enforcement and government officials and in response to third-party civil matters.

  • Ensuring responses to legal process comply with applicable laws and policies and procedures.

  • Determining when information can be disclosed to law enforcement under applicable laws.

  • Maintaining up to date knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.

  • Maintaining records of legal guidance provided.

  • Counseling the security team and providing guidance to legal and business partners regarding CALEA, ECPA, and the Wiretap Act.

  • Acting as the primary point of contact for external entities, including prosecutors, when there are legal issues to resolve on third-party legal process issued to the company.

  • Developing and delivering CALEA and other relevant training to employees.

  • Effectively partnering with key stakeholders on Verizon products and services and advising them of CALEA, ECPA, and Wiretap Act considerations.

  • Drafting concise written guidance for internal stakeholders and providing oral briefings to leadership and other internal groups.

  • Identifying legal issues and gathering relevant facts and analyzing them under applicable law.

  • Identifying potential risks associated with information disclosure and developing strategies to mitigate those risks.

  • Evaluating proposed legislation and regulations related to law enforcement and security for potential impact on Verizon and supporting policy SMEs in advocacy efforts to advance the company's interests.

What we're looking for...

You'll need to have:

  • JD or LLM and six or more years of experience.

  • Member in good standing of the bar of at least one state.

  • Prior experience working with law enforcement.

  • Prior experience that involved legal research and writing.

  • Substantive knowledge of CALEA, ECPA, and/or the Wiretap Act.

  • Ability to obtain clearance.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • Prior prosecutorial experience or in-house or law firm experience handling law enforcement legal process.

  • Prior experience analyzing legal issues under CALEA, ECPA, and/or the Wiretap Act.

  • Prior investigative or cybersecurity experience.

  • The ability to navigate multiple deadlines and balance numerous projects.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical, problem-solving, and oral and written communication skills.

  • The ability to analyze and devise solutions to legal issues under tight deadlines and with limited supervision.

  • The ability to explain complex legal concepts and requirements to non-legal professionals.

  • Experience as a team player with strong interpersonal and relationship management skills to navigate effectively in a matrixed organization, interact comfortably with personnel in various roles and levels across the organization, and enforce legal requirements without alienating clients.

Where you'll be working
In this hybrid role, you'll have a defined work location that includes working from home and a minimum of three days per week in the office, which will be set by your manager. The salary will vary depending on your location and confirmed job-related skills and experience. This is an incentive based position with the potential to earn more. For part-time roles, your compensation will be adjusted to reflect your hours. The annual salary range for the location(s) listed on this job requisition based on a full-time schedule is: $161,000.00 - $280,000.00.
