Job Overview:

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President of Community Health, the Director of Community Outreach and Engagement provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for system-wide community health initiatives.

This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating outreach programs that promote equitable access to care, improve population health outcomes, and strengthen partnerships with community stakeholders.

The Director works collaboratively with internal departments, external partners, and government entities to ensure programs align with RWJBarnabas Health s mission to advance health equity, improve community well-being, and foster trust between the health system and the diverse populations it serves.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree in Public Health, Community Health, Healthcare Administration, or a related field required
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in community health, public health, or healthcare outreach, including at least 3 years in a leadership or management role
  • Proven experience building partnerships with community-based organizations, health departments, and advocacy groups
  • Strong understanding of health equity, social determinants of health, and community health assessment methodologies
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments and with external stakeholders

Preferred:

  • Masters degree preferred
  • Familiarity with government relations, community advocacy, and public health policy development preferred

Essential Job Functions:

  • Lead the design and implementation of community outreach and engagement strategies that support system-wide community health goals
  • Collaborate with Compliance, the Physician Billing Office, Physician Practices, and other departments to ensure all regulations and reporting requirements are met
  • Partner with Government Affairs to align community engagement initiatives with public policy priorities and to strengthen relationships with local, county, and state officials
  • Build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations, public health agencies, schools, faith-based groups, and local government to address social determinants of health and enhance community impact
  • Work closely with leadership across the system, including health system executives, physician practices, and strategic vendors, to advance health improvement initiatives
  • Coordinate outreach and engagement efforts with other RWJBarnabas Health hospitals in the county and with County Departments of Health, ensuring alignment and maximizing collective impact
  • Develop, monitor, and report metrics related to community engagement, health equity, and population health outcomes
  • Communicate local, regional, and state health issues and trends to executive leadership to inform strategic planning and policy advocacy
  • Manage budgets, grants, and resources effectively to support community engagement initiatives
  • Represent RWJBarnabas Health at community events, coalitions, and public forums to promote health system programs and partnerships
