ASSISTANT DEPARTMENT MANAGER

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Dept. Manager to lead and optimize operations in our Clearwater facility. This role ensures efficient production, safety compliance, and continuous improvement across manufacturing processes.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ASSISTANT DEPARTMENT MANAGER

  • Support manufacturing operations in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Lead and guide Production Supervisors; evaluate performance and implement training.
  • Mentor Manufacturing Support Specialists; develop training materials for process and machine operators.
  • Conduct RMR and SPC analysis.
  • Attend department and facility production meetings.
  • Develop and manage weekly operations and manpower schedules, including vacation and overtime planning.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of manufacturing systems, processes, material flow, quality systems, and process control techniques.
  • Monitor work center performance; identify issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Create and review production schedules; ensure efficient material flow and accurate line-ups.
  • Collect and process production records; coordinate interdepartmental process flows.
  • Lead small projects and create detailed reports, charts, and graphs; provide recommendations based on analysis.
  • Evaluate and recommend new equipment, processes, and maintenance technologies.
  • Oversee budgeting and ordering of consumables, parts, and tools; implement cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Develop SOPs and FMEA documents.
  • Implement equipment scheduling rates and TPM plans; manage downtime and preventive maintenance.
  • Act as Department Manager when required.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED FOR THE ASSISTANT DEPARTMENT MANAGER

  • High School Diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years in a manufacturing supervisory or management role, including leadership of multiple supervisor level direct reports.
  • Extensive experience in managing production schedules, manpower planning (vacation and overtime), and coordinating process flows across departments.
  • In-depth knowledge of manufacturing systems, including computer systems, steel-making processes, material flow, quality systems, and process control techniques.
  • Proven ability to lead small project teams, manage resources, and create complex reports, charts, and graphs for performance analysis.
  • Experience in developing training materials, conducting operator training, and mentoring less experienced staff.
  • Skilled in identifying performance issues, recommending corrective actions, and implementing cost-reduction initiatives for parts and supplies.
  • Expertise in evaluating new equipment and technologies, managing TPM planning, and overseeing preventive maintenance and downtime.
  • Ability to monitor and control costs within own area and manage budgets for consumables and supplies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and environmental stewardship. Advanced knowledge of new equipment and maintenance technologies.
  • Skilled in evaluating and recommending equipment and process improvements. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment.
  • Flexible and effective under changing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, well organized and the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Willing to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.
