Title: Epidemiologist - Novel Surveillance Initiatives $66,081.60 - $93,475.20 / Posted Thru: 11/21/2025



Location: Remote/Virtual - Must live in the state of Michigan



Purpose: This position will support the Emerging Infectious Diseases Division in establishing, maintaining, and enhancing novel public health surveillance systems and data analytics to strengthen Michigan's response to infectious diseases. The work will span conditions and pathogens under the Division's purview, including foodborne illnesses, healthcare-associated infections, hepatitis, tuberculosis, and vector-borne, waterborne, and zoonotic diseases, among others. As an epidemiologist, this role will support both routine and novel disease investigations, identifying factors associated with increased risk of infection and transmission as well as those that contribute to morbidity and mortality. Ultimately, the position ensures that Michigan remains at the forefront of infectious disease detection, response, and prevention.



Duties and Responsibilities:
* Participate in the design, management, and enhancement of surveillance systems for diseases of public health importance, particularly related to novel surveillance systems.
* Establish protocols and processes for standardized disease reporting and pathogen detection for novel surveillance systems.
* Identify opportunities for enhancement and process improvements for data collection, disease reporting, and pathogen detection for novel surveillance systems.
* Collect disease and condition surveillance information and analyze surveillance data.
* Propose and initiate epidemiological investigations of communicable disease outbreaks utilizing novel public health surveillance systems.
* Use data from relevant databases and other health information systems, for epidemiological analysis.
* Coordinate and convene internal and external users of novel surveillance systems to improve data collection and use for public health action.
* Facilitate communication and coordination of surveillance results between laboratory and public health partners.
* Provide training and education to internal and external partners to ensure adherence to processes and maintain and improve data quality.
* Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.
* All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:



Education: Possession of a master's degree with a major in epidemiology or public health with a minimum of 8 semester (12 term) graduate-level hours in epidemiology and biostatistics courses.



Experience: Two years of professional experience carrying out a variety of surveys, investigations, tests, and analyses of human disease and chronic health conditions, including one year equivalent to an Epidemiologist 10.



Important Skills and Characteristics:



  • Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of epidemiology.
  • Knowledge of bio-statistics as applied to epidemiology.
  • Knowledge of the methods to control communicable health conditions.
  • Knowledge of the application of computers to the analysis and management of epidemiological data.
  • Knowledge of the transmission of infectious diseases and the pathologic processes leading to diseases.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to organize and analyze large sets of health data.
  • Knowledge of the methods used to conduct epidemiological investigations.
  • Ability to organize raw data in forms suitable for epidemiological analysis.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports, records, and papers related to the work.
  • Ability to maintain records and conduct correspondence related to the work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to design and use data collecting instruments.
  • Ability to analyze surveillance data and other information for the purposes of determining epidemiological investigations.
  • Ability to coordinate and convene partners to enhance public health response.



Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Job may require moderate physical effort including lifting materials and equipment of <25# and involves viewing a CRT or VDT screen 50% to 75% of the time. Standard office environment. Requires valid vehicle operator's license where needed to perform duties of the position. Frequent deadlines. In-state and out-of-state travel for related meetings.



RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibilities.



IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS.As part of a team, will help ensure data quality and assist stakeholders with technical assistance. This position will also support data requests, data matching, special projects, and annual reports for other conditions of public health interest.
