Job Summary
The Lead Structured Cabling Technician oversees and executes complex fiber and structured cabling installations for large-scale commercial and data center projects. This role combines advanced technical expertise in fiber splicing, termination, and testing with leadership and project coordination responsibilities. The Lead Technician ensures all installations meet quality, performance, and safety standards while providing direction to field teams and maintaining effective communication with project management and clients. Job Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities
Install and route structured cabling and fiber infrastructure according to project specifications
Perform cable management tasks, including dressing, labeling, and securing cables
Conduct fiber and cable terminations, including single-mode and multi-mode connectors (ST, LC, SC, SC-APC, etc.)
Perform ribbon and fusion splicing using appropriate splicing equipment
Conduct Fluke and OTDR testing for fiber certification and performance validation
Troubleshoot and repair fiber and cabling issues to ensure system reliability
Install racks, ladder racks, cable trays, cabinets, and related infrastructure components
Assemble and install server racks and perform rack elevations per design drawings
Execute OSP (Outside Plant) installations, including running fiber into data centers
Verify and document installation quality and adherence to design blueprints
Follow written and verbal instructions while maintaining professional communication with team members and supervisors
Comply with OSHA and site-specific safety standards, including the use of proper PPE and maintaining clean job sites
Leadership and Management Responsibilities
Supervise and lead field teams to complete large-scale commercial and data center projects efficiently
Manage and communicate project expectations to clients and general contractors
Conduct on-site safety meetings and enforce adherence to safety protocols
Forecast labor and resource needs to meet project schedules and deliverables
Review and submit blueprint changes and change orders to the Project Manager as required
Monitor and maintain material inventory; order supplies and equipment as needed
Ensure all project documentation and progress reporting are accurate and up to date
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED required
Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Data Center Technician
Minimum of five (5) years of experience in fiber installation and splicing
Proven experience managing large field crews (10+ personnel)
Proficiency in fiber splicing, termination, and testing
Strong understanding of structured cabling systems, installation standards, and industry codes
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
OSHA 10 certification preferred
Ability to interpret blueprints, project drawings, and technical documentation
Strong communication and leadership skills with a focus on safety and team coordination
Physical Requirements
Ability to work on ladders, scissor lifts, and in confined spaces
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds as needed
Ability to stand or walk for extended periods during work shifts
Tools and Equipment
Must possess basic hand tools including screwdriver (multi-bit), tape measure, snips, pliers (needle nose and channel locks), punch-down tool, and flashlight
Must provide and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including steel-toe or composite-toe work boots, gloves, and a tool pouch
