Position Description

Performs complex safety and health program work. Work involves developing and implementing safety policies and procedures, participating in the safety training and education of staff, inspecting work areas and activities for hazards, and investigating accidents. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

About the Department and/or College

The Department of Environmental Health & Safety seeks to provide a safe and healthy place of employment and learning and to cultivate positive attitudes towards safety, security and preparedness through the establishment and implementation of occupational and environmental protection programs for the University.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Inspect work areas, research areas, equipment, and practices to ensure compliance with TTU safety standards and governmental regulations.
  • Manage EH&S related inventory and survey information through safety software used by the department.
  • Effective use of communication to ensure a smooth inner working department and constructive relations outside of the department.
  • Determine root cause of incidents and assess ways to improve safety at TTU going forward.
  • Use analytical equipment to assess hazards, test safety equipment, or perform air quality monitoring.
  • Provide assistance to lab personnel as needed to maintain optimum safety conditions in the form of consults, training and education, and supplying EHS-provided resources.

Required Qualifications

Proficiency in written and mathematical processes as may be reflected by completion of high school and two years of college level work in Occupation Health and Safety with course work in assigned area. Four years of job-related experience. Additional job-related education may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis. Thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to occupational safety. General knowledge of safety procedures as related to assigned tasks. Ability to assist in the execution of a program of campus safety. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely.

This position is designated as involving access to critical infrastructure systems and/or research, as defined by Texas Executive Order GA-48. As such, candidates must successfully complete a comprehensive background check prior to employment. Employees are required to comply with all applicable state and federal regulations related to the protection of critical infrastructure. Ongoing employment is dependent upon maintaining eligibility for access and successfully passing periodic security and compliance reviews.
