The Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences (
DMCS) at Rutgers University-New Brunswick is seeking an Instructor to teach an online 3-credit undergraduate course, "Introduction to Oceanography", Course #: 11:628:120:90:00042, during Winter Session 2026 (December 22, 2025 - January 16, 2026), and Summer Session 2026 which has 2 sessions (May 26, 2026-June 18, 2026 & July 6, 2026- July 31, 2026.)
This fully online course introduces undergraduate students to the fundamental concepts and interdisciplinary nature of oceanography, emphasizing large-scale Earth-ocean processes and system interactions. Students explore the geological, physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the ocean and how these disciplines interconnect to shape marine environments and influence global systems.
The course is offered in both Winter and Summer Sessions, conducted entirely online through Rutgers' Canvas learning management system. Instruction combines multimedia content, readings, virtual discussions, and applied exercises to engage students in oceanographic concepts and methods.
Appointment is contingent upon successful completion of all pre-employment screening, and sufficient enrollment.

Qualifications
| Minimum Education and Experience |
- Master's degree or higher in Oceanography, Marine Science, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Prior teaching experience in higher education, preferably online.
- Strong organizational and communication skills; proficiency with Canvas or similar LMS.

Candidate must have a PhD. Experience in oceanographic field techniques/lessons; experience in remote teaching, multimedia classroom techniques, and online learning management systems (canvas) is required. |

Work is performed independently, requiring extended periods of computer use and online engagement with students. |

This course is offered through the Rutgers University-New Brunswick Office of Summer and Winter Sessions and administered by the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences (

Instruction is conducted fully online, and no on-campus presence is required. The instructor is expected to be available virtually for student communication, online office hours, and coordination with
DMCS and the Office of Summer & Winter Sessions during the session period (December 22, 2025 - January 16, 2026 & May 26, 2026- June 18, 2026 & July 6, 2026- July 31, 2026 ). |
