Job Description - Student Intern, Community Outreach

Position Description

Tucson Electric Power, one of Arizona's leading utility companies, seeks an individual for the position of Student Intern, Community Outreach. The Community Outreach Intern will support TEP's efforts to connect with local communities, focusing on increasing awareness and participation in programs that help residents manage and pay their utility bills. This internship is designed for college students interested in gaining hands-on experience in community engagement, advocacy, and program support. Interns will work closely with TEP staff and community partners to build trust, connect people with resources, and promote economic empowerment.

This position requires frequent travel to community events and variable hours including some evenings/weekends.

Position-Related Responsibilities

  • Support Community Prosperity: Assist in enrolling residents in programs that lower utility bills and reduce debt, contributing to the financial stability of local communities.
  • Community Engagement: Help develop and execute outreach strategies for mobile home parks, rental properties, and other communities with high energy burdens.
  • Program Promotion: Inform and assist community members in applying for utility bill assistance programs (e.g., LIHEAP, TEP affordability programs).
  • Energy Efficiency Education: Educate residents about weatherization and energy conservation measures, helping them choose the right rate and connecting them to relevant programs to save money.
  • Customer Enrollment & Referral: Assist customers in enrolling in programs and services, update contact information, and refer customers to agency partners for emergency needs.
  • Relationship Building: Support the maintenance of relationships with community leaders, property managers, non-profits, and partner organizations.
  • Event Assistance: Help organize and staff community events, workshops, and informational sessions to promote program enrollment and financial literacy. Some evening and weekend work may be required.
  • Needs Assessment: Listen to residents and partners to gather feedback and assess community needs, sharing insights with TEP teams.
  • Advocacy and Support: Assist community members in navigating application processes and connecting them with support services.
  • Documentation: Help track outreach activities and report on engagement metrics.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must be currently enrolled as a full time student in a college degree program (any major/area of study).
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse populations.
  • Empathy and Cultural Sensitivity: Demonstrates cultural awareness and empathy.
  • Organizational Skills: Able to manage tasks, prioritize, and maintain accurate records.
  • Transportation: Ability to travel to community locations for outreach events.
  • Preferred qualification: Spanish Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work up to 20 hours per week during regular business hours; and up to 40 hours per week during summer and school breaks depending on the business needs.
  • Student Interns must maintain the required hours for full-time student status, good academic standing at their college or university, as defined by the college or university and the GPA required for graduation by their college or university.
  • Failure to maintain full-time status, good academic standing and/or the required GPA will result in Student Interns being deemed ineligible for participation in this program.
  • Student Interns are employed on a temporary basis and are generally not eligible for some benefits; including holiday pay.
  • Scheduling of work hours and assignments should be made taking into consideration that Student Interns are students first and employees second.

Pay Rate: Salary determined based on candidates experience and qualifications.
