Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Senior Construction Materials Engineering Technician to join our Construction Services team in Lexington, Kentucky. Are you ready to contribute your knowledge and experience to meaningful projects? Join us at S&ME!

As a Senior Construction Materials Testing Technician, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety, quality, and compliance of construction projects through expert-level testing and inspection of materials such as soil, concrete, asphalt, and masonry. Your deep technical knowledge and field experience will directly impact the structural integrity of infrastructure projects, while your leadership and mentorship will help shape the next generation of technicians. You'll be a trusted resource on job sites, interpreting plans and specifications, maintaining high standards of accuracy, and fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence. This role requires adaptability, as you'll work outdoors in varying weather conditions, manage a fluctuating schedule, and occasionally support projects during weekends or holidays.

Your Day-to-Day:



  • Lead Field Testing & Inspections: Conduct testing of soil, concrete, asphalt, and masonry materials, ensuring compliance with project specifications and building codes.
  • Mentor and Develop Junior Technicians: Provide on-the-job training, technical guidance to less experienced staff, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team culture.
  • Coordinate and Interpret Project Requirements: Review construction plans and specifications to determine testing needs, assign tasks to team members, and ensure timely, accurate reporting of results.
  • Maintain Equipment and Accreditation Standards: Oversee the calibration and upkeep of testing equipment, ensuring compliance with AASHTO, ASTM, and other relevant quality standards.
  • Adapt to Dynamic Schedules and Field Demands: Embrace a flexible work schedule that may include early mornings, weekends, or holidays, and remain responsive to shifting project timelines and field conditions.



What You Bring:



  • A High School diploma/GED
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • Six(6) or more active certifications:


    • American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
    • International Code Council (ICC): Special Inspector (Reinforced Concrete, Masonry, Soils)
    • DOT Certifications in the fields of Aggregate, Conventional Density, Asphalt, and Concrete


  • Effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • Math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure



Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:



  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
