DESCRIPTION

The Department of Urology provides the highest quality urologic care, research, and education. The Department provides general urologic and subspecialty care in urology oncology, infertility and andrology, women's pelvic medicine and voiding dysfunction, urinary stone disease and endourology, reconstructive urology and urologic trauma, and pediatric urology. The urology clinical program consists of over 20 faculty members, 5 fellows, 15 residents, 9 APPs, and conducts ambulatory outpatient care in 7 clinical sites.

Under the direction of Urologic Surgeons, the Sr. Physician Assistant (PA) provides clinical expertise in patient care in support of the Urology Service, Gynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Division.

This position is primarily ambulatory, with responsibilities that include independently evaluating and managing patients in the outpatient setting and providing clinical support for our gender-affirming care program. The Sr. PA will work closely with the multidisciplinary care team to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. Responsibilities and scope of practice may evolve over time based on the needs and priorities of the department.

The Sr. PA may provide care in inpatient and outpatient settings. Inpatient responsibilities include, but are not limited to, patient evaluations: history and physical exams, development and execution of treatment plans, patient care coordination with nursing staff, and discharge planning. Outpatient responsibilities include independent evaluation and management of acute and chronic issues, prioritizing and resolving issues, and escalating to physicians as appropriate.

The PA ensures continuity of care between inpatient and outpatient settings. Manage and document all communications in the electronic medical record system. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient; demonstrate excellent communication skills, involving the physicians, resident team, nursing staff, family, and all other relevant team members to provide excellent comprehensive care. May provide first assist responsibilities in the operating room. Additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • BART or BLS at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant Physician Assistant experience. Urology or gynecology PA experience highly preferred.

  • Allied Health privileges required and must be maintained during employment.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Knowledge of common urologic problems and treatments.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician in-charge and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics.

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Two (2+) or more years of urology or gynecology PA experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice. May require occasional evening and weekend hours beyond the normal workday. Must be willing to be flexible regarding work site within San Diego County.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $160,922 - $211,974 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $77.07 - $101.52

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
