The Director, Philanthropy develops and executes successful fundraising strategies with a portfolio of major gift prospects while supporting the Foundation's overall charitable giving initiatives. The Director plays an important role in partnering with the CEO for individual donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Additionally, the Director serves on the Foundation Leadership Team and partners to develop and execute strategies that drive the achievement of the organization's goals, while continuously optimizing fundraising to support growth, revenue diversification and sustainability.

This is a hybrid position that requires candidates to live in the Washington, DC area and be present in the downtown Bethesda, Maryland office as needed. At ASHP, we consider skills, experience, and organizational needs in our compensation approach. The salary range for this position is $110,000-$137,500 and ASHP offers a comprehensive benefits plan. What You'll Be Doing

    Participates in the development of the Foundation's overall strategic plan and annual operating plans.
  • Administers established fundraising policies, procedures, and practices for the Foundation to help ensure compliance.
  • Supports the preparation of the annual operating budget for the Foundation developed in collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer and members of the Foundation Leadership Team.
  • Leads projects and/or campaigns across the Foundation and with other ASHP offices.
  • Recommends staffing levels and responsibilities to meet work plans for assigned divisions.
  • Recommends personnel actions affecting subordinate employees within assigned divisions. Assists in career planning and staff development for assigned divisional employees. Responsible for defining employee performance objectives and conducting performance reviews for direct reports.
  • In partnership with CEO and Foundation Leadership Team, support the development and implementation of a multi-year fundraising strategy with a primary focus on principal / major giving, leadership giving, annual fund, planned giving, and foundation/private grants.
  • Work with an assigned portfolio of donors as well as potential supporters. Partner with other leaders and subject matter experts to optimize the donor cycle.
  • Lead donor engagement initiatives and support the development of customized stewardship plans.
  • Monitor and report on actual performance against the annual budget for assigned divisions.
  • Direct ongoing efficiency and operational improvement for assigned activities across divisions.
  • Recruit and support volunteers for Board Development, Planned Giving Committee and other ad hoc taskforces. Serve as staff liaison.
  • Manage the donor database as well as supervise gift processing, donor acknowledgements and donor reporting.
  • Serve as liaison to various ASHP committees.
  • Manage consultants, vendors, and service providers, including contract creation, payment, and reconciliation, for assigned divisions, per approved policies.
  • Directly supervises assigned staff and provides them with effective management and leadership.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


What You Bring to ASHP

  • Requires a bachelor's degree.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in major giving and/or non-profit management.
  • Experience in healthcare philanthropy required.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing a portfolio of donors with a capacity to make $100K+ gifts-and documented success raising $1M+.
  • Strong project management and writing skills.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working across divisions/departments
  • Proven ability to foster cooperation among staff, vendors, and other stakeholders, ensuring effective collaboration and alignment toward common goals.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, with a demonstrated capacity for creative problem-solving, managing overlapping activities, embracing change, and quickly adapting to new technologies.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to streamline processes that maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • This position requires domestic travel for conferences, meetings, donor visits and events. The anticipated travel requirement is 15% to 20%
  • Demonstrated ability to close six-figure plus major gifts.
  • Ability to build strong external relationships with individuals and other funders.
  • Track record of designing and implementing customized stewardship programs.
  • Experience working within a donor database.
