Position Description:

In the role of Medical Student Cancer Research Fellow, you will be working in our Center for Cancer Discovery.

Purpose:
Under the guidance of a mentor, the Medical Student Cancer Research Fellows will participate in a biomedical research environment in the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center that is supportive and favorable to learning, and includes opportunities to interact other investigators to develop cancer research skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Devote at least 75% effort to the cancer research project outline in the program application with approximately 25% effort dedicated to maintaining clinical skills and becoming a physician scientist.
  • Learn to develop, in a mentored fashion, hypotheses and design experiments to test hypotheses.
  • Demonstrate good organizational and time management skills.
  • Use appropriate tools and software to document and analyze collected data.
  • Develop a manuscript, present at national or international meeting(s) to showcase results of research.
  • Evaluate, interpret, and assess experimental data and quality control of assays.
  • Participate in program and lab group activities such as lab meetings and seminars to enrich analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Participate in periodic review meetings with program leadership to assess progress in achieving program metrics.
  • Participate in research conferences within and beyond the institution.
  • Participate in community engagement and outreach activities.
  • Participate in MCW Cancer Center philanthropic activities
  • Attend and present at the MCW Cancer Center trainee symposium.
  • Complete final progress report summarizing project finds and deliverables, publications, and how funds were spent to further career goals.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic biology and chemistry principles.
  • Ability to perform experiments, record data, and analyze data.
  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.




Preferred Schedule:




8am-4:30pm M-F



Position Requirements:

Qualifications:

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree, enrollment in MCW Medical School and completion of Phase 1, or completion of M4 year and prior to starting residency.

Physical Requirements: Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment: Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity: Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
