Position Highlights

AZPM, the award-winning NPR/PBS affiliate in Tucson, Arizona, has an opening for a part time Radio/TV Announcer on their news and classical radio stations KUAZ and KUAT-FM. The successful candidate will host syndicated and local news and information programming and/or music programming during an assigned shift, with occasional other duties as assigned. If selected, you would join a dedicated team committed to bringing quality programming with integrity to Southern Arizona.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Cue and start recorded materials; maintain proper volume levels and monitor off-air transmissions to ensure audio quality.
  • Operate broadcast control room equipment, including microphones, sound mixers, audio recorders/reproducers, audio editing software, and monitors.
  • Research, develop, write, and produce content for broadcast.
  • Review program logs for assigned broadcast periods and secure appropriate recordings and written materials for public informational announcements, promotional announcements, funding acknowledgments, and other programmatic content.
  • Introduce and announce acquired programs and provide commentary and information to the listening audience.
  • Serve as a substitute host during another announcer's regularly scheduled shift as needed.
  • Record and edit content for broadcast.
  • Participate in on-air membership campaigns by encouraging listeners to contribute to support the radio station.
  • Maintain awareness of and monitor transmitter performance parameters.
  • Research and prepare interview questions and conduct interviews for broadcast.
  • Represent the station at community and public events and serve as master of ceremonies as needed.
  • Monitor EAS equipment and respond to announcements and events as required by Emergency Alert System protocols.
  • Perform other duties related to broadcast operations and audience engagement as assigned within the scope of the position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills and understanding of public radio and broadcasting practices.
  • Knowledge of current local, national, and international events.
  • Knowledge of classical music.
  • Strong on-air presence compatible with NPR aesthetics.
  • Skill in using a friendly, conversational, and engaging style on-air.
  • Skill in operating broadcast control room and audio production systems.
  • Skill in speaking clearly with proper diction and voice modulation.
  • Skill in correctly pronouncing foreign names, locations, and non-English terms.
  • Skill in voice recording and digital audio editing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, demonstrating strong listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and within tight deadlines.
  • Ability to perform confidently in ad-lib and live broadcasting situations, including interviews, on-air fundraising, and public appearances.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, or holidays as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • On-air hosting or reporter experience in radio or similar media environment.
  • Experience using audio editing software (e.g., Adobe Audition, Hindenburg, Audacity).
  • Experience with FCC broadcast rules and requirements.
  • Experience writing for on-air scripts, promotional copy, and brief announcements.
  • Experience working in jazz music and/or classical or other relevant genres.
  • Bilingual or proficient in a second language.
