JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking an experienced technical lead who is hands-on in the development and implementation of technical solutions to drive the design, implementation, and optimization of integrations between Epic and a variety of third-party systems. Able to lead and own the technical implementations end to end. This role is responsible for architecting, deploying, and maintaining FHIR APIs, HL7 v2 interfaces, and EDI workflows to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient data exchange across our enterprise healthcare ecosystem.

The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in Epic Bridges, Interconnect, and Interface Engines (such as Cloverleaf, MuleSoft, or Rhapsody), along with hands-on experience in developing and managing RESTful and SOAP APIs, ETL processes, and healthcare EDI transactions. This position demands a blend of technical expertise, architectural vision, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable integration solutions aligned with clinical and business objectives

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Technical Lead for Integration Projects: Responsible for the full lifecycle of Epic integration initiatives-from planning to deployment-ensuring alignment with business needs and technical standards.
  • EDI Transactions: Implement and maintain EDI transactions including claims (837), remittance advice (835), and eligibility (270/271).
  • Vendor Collaboration: Partner with third-party vendors and technology providers to optimize and manage Epic integrations.
  • Partner with clinical, product, and operational leaders to translate complex interoperability and regulatory requirements into practical Epic integration solutions that fit real-world workflows.
  • Solution Architecture: Collaborate with technical and clinical stakeholders to define scalable and secure integration architectures.
  • Lead design and evolution of FHIR-based and HL7-driven interoperability architectures to support scalable, standards-aligned data exchange and digital quality initiatives. Define best practices for integration design, coding standards, and transition from legacy interfaces to FHIR APIs.
  • Epic Interface Management: Serve as the Epic Interface Analyst, developing and maintaining interfaces via Epic Bridges, Interconnect, and external integration engines.
  • API Development: Design, develop, and manage APIs and microservices to support communication between Epic and external systems.
  • Data Integration: Drive ETL and data mapping processes, ensuring accuracy and consistency across structured and unstructured data.
  • Compliance & Security: Collaborate with Information security and ensure all integrations comply with HIPAA, security, and privacy standards using protocols such as OAuth, SAML, and encryption.
  • Documentation & Testing: Maintain detailed interface documentation and oversee field-level, unit, and end-to-end testing of all integrations.
  • Guide integration and development teams through design/code reviews, establish best practices for FHIR/HL7 interface design, and promote continuous skill growth within Epic and interoperability domains.


QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 8+ years in integration roles, with extensive exposure to HL7, FHIR APIs, EDI, and data integration.
  • Epic Expertise: Proven hands-on experience as an Epic Interface Analyst, using Epic Bridges, Interconnect, and at least one interface engine (Cloverleaf, Rhapsody, or MuleSoft).
  • Healthcare Transactions: Skilled in implementing Eligibility (270/271), Authorization (278), Claims (837), Remittance (835), and E-Prescribing integrations.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with REST, SOAP, JSON, XML, SQL, JDBC, and vendor-specific APIs.
  • Data & EDI Integration: Deep understanding of X12, EDIFACT standards and integrations.
  • Protocols: Working knowledge of TCP/IP, SFTP, and secure data transmission methods.
  • Problem-Solving: Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex Epic integration issues in fast-paced environments.
  • Candidates not based in the SF Bay Area must be willing to travel to our office in Oakland, CA for 2-3 days each month.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Epic Certification: Epic Bridges or related module certification.
  • Epic System Expertise: Experience with Epic Public APIs (CTI, Credit Card Gateway, Printing/Faxing).
  • Cloud Platforms: Familiarity with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud and Epic cloud integration solutions.
  • Automation & Scripting: Experience with Python, PowerShell, or CI/CD pipelines for integration automation.
  • Experience working within Microsoft Azure cloud infrastructure, including Azure Virtual Machines, App Services, SQL, and Networking components (VNet, ExpressRoute, NSG).
  • Exposure to Azure integration services such as Service Bus, Event Grid, Logic Apps, and API Management for orchestrating HL7/FHIR and REST-based interfaces.
  • Familiarity with Azure Active Directory / EntraID, OIDC, and service principal authentication for secure API integrations.
  • Experience utilizing Azure DevOps for CI/CD pipeline automation, release management, and infrastructure-as-code deployments.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional technical initiatives and represent integration and interoperability expertise across enterprise and vendor ecosystems; adept at leading without authority to align clinical, technical, and business objectives.
  • Working knowledge of observability frameworks using Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Log Analytics to monitor interface performance and data-flow reliability.
  • Ability to design and maintain proactive alerting and visualization dashboards (Power BI, Grafana, or similar) for integration health, latency, and SLA compliance.
  • Strong understanding of end-to-end system observability, including centralized logging, correlation IDs, and integration health dashboards across Epic, middleware, and third-party systems.

Base Pay Information

The national base pay range at the end is a good-faith estimate of what Delta Dental may pay for new hires. Actual pay may vary based on Delta Dental's assessment of the candidate's knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, certifications and ability to meet required minimum job qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include prevailing wages in the work location and internal equity.
