Overview

Summer Associate Overview
* The Orrick Summer Associate position is a unique opportunity for a highly qualified law student graduating in 2028 to gain valuable experience at a leading law firm.
* You will be a full member of Orrick's 2026 1L Summer Associate Program and/or Orrick's 2027 2L Summer Associate Program and compensated as an Orrick Summer Associate.
* Orrick partner sponsors will oversee your work assignments, networking opportunities, and career coaching.
* Contingent upon work performance, and continued academic excellence, you will have the opportunity to receive a return offer at the conclusion of your summer.

Application Process
* The firm seeks entrepreneurial, driven, and engaged law students with strong academic credentials and a demonstrated interest in at least one of Orrick's six Business Units: Litigation, Corporate, SAGE (our regulatory practice), Energy & Infrastructure, Intellectual Property, and Finance.
* As part of your application, you will be asked whether you are interested in a 1L 2026 Summer Associate position and/or a 2L 2027 Summer Associate position.
* You will be considered for all the position(s) you indicate an interest in.
* Candidates with prior relevant experience or a demonstrated interest in one of our six Business Units, as well as their associated practices, are preferred. This may include previous work in these areas and exposure through coursework or research.
* A full list of Orrick's practice groups, and which Business Unit they are affiliated with, can be found here.
* Please indicate in your cover letter which Business Unit and/or practice area(s) you are interested in.
* Candidates should expect to work predominately with the Business Unit they have indicated a primary interest in.
* Applicants must provide a resume, transcript (when available), and cover letter articulating your interest both in the position(s) and the firm. If your most recent grades are not available at the time of application, please log back in to your profile to supplement your application as soon as you receive your grades.
* Virtual interviews will begin to take place in November.

Responsibilities

As an Orrick Summer Associate, our goal is to provide you with a meaningful and rewarding summer experience.

* You will do substantive work, spanning a wide breadth of assignments across Orrick's varied practices and offices.
* You will be provided with opportunities to deepen your understanding of the practice of law through attorney shadowing experiences and participation in both local and national training programs, including workshops on improving your legal writing skills and how to become a more effective speaker.
* Our summer program features a variety of unique events and programming designed to foster connections among Summer Associates and Orrick attorneys. These include both local and national social activities. Past events have included courses on making sushi, charcuterie boards, and candles, as well as recreational activities like baseball games, canoeing, sailing, beach cycling, karaoke, Topgolf, bowling, and chocolate tastings.


Qualifications

Applicants must be pursuing a JD degree at an ABA-accredited law school with an anticipated graduation date in 2028. Applicants enrolled in part-time JD programs or pursuing dual degrees (e.g., JD/MBA) at an ABA-accredited law school, who are not expected to graduate in 2028, are also eligible to apply.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected gross salary for this position is $4,326.92/week.

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
